KGAP is probably your best bet for replacement parts of this nature...
  • The material was a canvas/duck material. Used for exactly what you described: to keep dirt and moisture out from the engine bay. Staples might be hard to come by to secure this back on,so you might want to fab some copper wire into staples and put them on yourself. They work great and won't rust.

Another option is to pull the staples out and use conventional staples to put the new ones on. Just push them in and bend over the tabs................

I had some made at a tent and awning place. Very heavy duty canvas.

You can buy heavy staples from Restoration Specialties. They look good though I haven't installed any yet, so don't know if they are as brittle as the original. Come loose in a pkg of 100. Have used baling wire before. Pair of pliers makes about the right spacing. Cut wire on an angle to get sharp points. Drill out the original holes to a 64th or 32nd.

The K-gap dust shield is of much thinner material than the original. But it is cut and sewn well. It does not come with the metal bars used on the bottom. Appears to be black or a very dark green.

You are right the K-gap material is much lighter than the original. I have a set but elected to have some make special to get a heavier canvas.

I had one piece of rubber from under a sill that was in good enough shape to make a pattern. I used a couple of the center (punched out) pieces from the cowl vent seal that I got from Press Kale (K-gap) some time back. It seems to work OK. It is an odd shaped piece, which in addition to fitting under the sill, runs down the side of the sill, and back along the door post.

Have not yet installed the thinner dust shields. Original works, but was bleached in degreasing. Not sure will take die. but i may try to paint.

Found some thin rubber (approx 1/16 inch) with fabric reinforcement at the Rubber House that I am using on the forward sides of the radiator shell, and heavier versions (3/16 inch) for the piece under the master cylinder and to replace cardboard shield between the 1st cross member and radiator u-channel. Also used same for the stone guard ahead of the rear bumper. Don't know if all this is used on '53's. Used K-gap material on fender cowl seal.

... take dye. It's me that this project is going to do in! W
  • Before I bought the black canvas to make the cloth splash guards, I measured the thickness of the original ones on Press Kale's '49 Super six, one of my dad's '54 Hollywoods, and on my own 2dr Jet. I measured at the area where they are stapled to the inner fender... All three original pieces, and the repro ones are within .003 of each other.
