I've got a real bad groan/vibration between 40-50 mph. I had a couple of the experts drive it at the chapter picnic on Sunday and they think it is in the carrier bearing or the carrier bushings. The manual doesn't show much, but something about carrier doesn't look right. I have taken some photos to see what you all's thoughts and comments are. I hope I can post them successfully.

Sorry, 54 Hornet manual trans, and I can't figure how to post the pics again. I just don't do it enough here.

I've posted them, I just can't remember what to click on. I have them in my photbucket, which I know I have to do, but there is something you have to do on this site to post them. I appreciate the offer, but I won't remember if I don't do it more myself. . Rick walked me through it when I posted my interior pics, but that was a couple of months ago.

Just go to the place where you've uploaded your photo. Place your cursor on the photo, and right-click. When the menu box appears, left-click on PROPERTIES. Then, in the box that opens, look for ADDRESS (URL) and copy what you see there to your desktop. Then, simply paste that URL somewhere in your message. (Be sure not to have any commas, parentheses or other punctuation marks attached to it, or it won't work)

Must be a couple of ways of doing it. When I posted my interior shots, the pictures were right in the thread.

OK Rick now how did you do that?

That looks familiar. I'll give it a try and if it works I will write it down this time. Now what do you experts think of this carrier. It doesn't look like a factory part to me.

That's pretty slick, I need to know how to do that.

Now if I can get some stepdown experts involved to tell me what they think of that support. Doesn't look original to me.

I had one member out here in CA when he looked at the photos say the same thing. I don't know what a factory unit looks like and I can't imagine what could have happened to it that this homemade piece would have to be made.?????????
  • Necessity is the mother of invention and that looks like what you got.

When I tore my 49 down the center carrrier bracket was bent to heck - most probably from hitting a rock or something else - that's what I'd guess happened to yours...

here is a sketch from the mechanical procedure book, it shows the difference between automatic and standard transmissions for the bearing mounts.
  • It is hard to tell by your pictures but it looks like the center support bracket is not the correct one for a hydromatic transmission. Plus it looks as though the exhaust pipe is up against the side of the bracket as well.
  • Im sorry I mis-read your thread, you did say Manual trans not automatic! but in looking again at the center support bracket it is still not correct nor is it factory.

Just out of curiosity has anyone got a pic of a correct one?

There was a thread about a carrier bearing last month. This one is for Hydramatic, and according to Bill Albright the bushings are incorrect, but you can get the right ones from K-Gap.

Gee can't imagine why I have problems, mine doesn't look anything like Rambo's. Can't imagine what happened to my original one and why someone would make one instaed of finding the right replacement. I just keep finding the hoakiest things on this car.
