I need a 262 iron head that was cast by American Motors in 1955-56.

On the top of the head in line with the temp.sender and #6 spark plug hole there will be the Code . The first will be a letter which is the month. The second will be the day of the month. And the last one is the Important one ,it will be the # 5 or 6. ( that last # will be the head i need )

Please help me find one that is Not Cracked. It can have 7/16 or 1/2 stud holes

Thanks to all for the help. Rudy.

  • IL HAVE 262 HEADS FROM 51 TO 54 WITH SCRIPT 262 ON FRONT. albrighthudsos@msn.com
  • Did AMC cast replacement parts for the earlier Hudson engines? The last production year for the 262 was 1954, wasn't it?

    Yes they did Dany.

    At one time i had a 1955 232 alum. head and a 262 1955 iron head and used them on Turbocharged 308 Jet drag car. A hud-nut in town also has a 1956 iron 262 head.on a 55 308.

A.m.c. changed the thickness of the casting on the top from front to rear and you can see the change where the Regulator mount is. It is thicker and raised up higher that the 54 and back heads. Look at the date code and that last # is the year of the head casting and the heads were 7/16 bolt holes.

Dick Thorp gave me one when i was in the Jet.

    Thanks. Rudy.

No need to confirm Rudy ... he does his research and knows the facts. Just here to say... just sold a 56 replacement motor with the later 262 head. Yes AMC did redo those heads... why... have not a clue.

    Cheers :)

    Thanks Ken for the help.

The early 262 and 232 heads would crack from the regulator mount housing down into the # 1 spark plug hole and sometimes on top between the center head bolt hole to the outer holes.

The 55-56 castings are Thicker on the top from front to rear and the regulator gasket mount is Much Thicker. You can really see and feel the thickness of the casting.

    Thanks to all Rudy.

I remember reading about this in the T.H.E. OR N.T.N. OR W.T.N. or,or,or, but then that would be many, many, many years back. ( the Senior Moments get in the way sometimes ) so does my spelling.
  • Thanks for the great information Rudy. I'll have to keep a look out for these.
