308 Powered Jet Gasser

Haven't posted in a while, a couple asked for updates on my 308 in a Jet drag car.I built this engine myself....1st 308...firewall was cut and engine set back and down .Cooper parts was a big help..It is a .060 block with Clifford intake and H145 aluminum head...these are old school parts.I removed the 4th ring and cut the pistons, I designed my own port and relief on the block...converted a 6 cyl chevy HEI ignition system...running a 500 cfm Holley and E85 fuel with electric fuel and water pump .I found this engine very easy to build and did not use rope seals at the rear main.I read numerous articles about this engine from Sloan and Teague. It is not a high tech stroker motor, but runs great.I installed a a very big hot race cam . This is mated with a Wilcap adapter to a bilt Turbo 350 with a trans brake. The Wilcap is the best adapter I've seen...imo,very high quality. I using a narrowed 9 inch Ford rear end with Moser axles and a spool.Been to track once, and correcting issues (not engine related) I encountered. I saw my first jet in 1969...had to have one..lol..Testing will continue with warmer weather...I will attempt to post pics.

I might point out i encountered a 308 troll on another forum, very narcissistic know it all.Said his biggest fear was that i would think he doesn't know what he is talking about....who says crap like that...

I haven't seen him post here,so that's good.

Will try pics again...so the 308 Guru...told me in a text...'you will be @9.90 in the 1/8th you will see"...I guess he has run a bunch of 9.90's..anyway I have fed him some crow pie with feathers...car went 8.88 on a 8.89 qualifier...came that close to a trophy...the car will go quicker, still fine tuning and may switch to slicks from the radial ones I'm running...this is not a stroker motor and running a big Holley 2 barrel with home made headers. The engine is not a classic 7 X...I used my own technique for port and relief ,cut off 4th ring...hei ignition and some E85 mix...hope pics will post...if not can I get some instruction?

    ....Thanks @

Very cool car. It appears you are running disc brakes with a stock suspension. I would be interested in any info you have on that set up as I am starting a restoration on a 54 two door.

No ratlee2,it's 4 wheel drum brakes, stock Hudson Jet in front, with old 9 inch Ford narrow drums in the rear with a Ford dual pot master cylinder.

I am considering rigging up some mounts for some Wilwood or Strange Engineering rotors and calipers...but expensive for sure.

I wonder how it would go with 3 x 45 Webers? That time equates to about 13.8 in the quarter. I think there was a '40 coupe running high 12's with a Hornet engine - Randy Maas?

You've done a nice job here.

Thanks Terraplane,I recently discovered throttle linkages had slipped, not opening all the way. This should help performance..lol.Hope to get back to track soon with update. The coupe you speak of i believe ran a big highly modified stroker motor. I have no such intentions....i used many stock and readily available parts, although the H145 aluminum head is getting a little rare i think...im trying get max out of a stock stroke engine...good enough for me.I have anther race car with big inch Ford motor, but this Jet is a lot of fun...thanks !
