1954 Hornet Loose wires, - neutral safety switch?

Having a lot of electrical problems in my newly acquired 1954 Hornet coupe... One of which I suppose is loose wires maybe touching ground. Not sure where they need to be connected.

These are below the power brake booster, on the left side of firewall.

Is the mechanical part in middle of the photo the neutral safety switch?

The leftmost wire is loose. I can see it only by pushing the camera down under the brake booster assembly. It seems to have a crimped end on it, supposed to be connected to a female connector?

Then there is another loose wire on the same area , firewall left side. coming from a tube shaft. This has lost the insulation cover for all... what is the wire and where it is supposed to be connected in the engine bay?

  • Yes that is the neutral safety switch, and also turns on the back up light if equipped. The loose wire is probably the back up wire. The wire coming out of the tube is the horn wire.

  • New wiring harness for Hudsons are available from YNZ’s yesterdays parts in CA. Complete wires bumper to bumper.

    Tinslead,

The wire coming out of the tube (steering column) is the horn button. It should have a bullet plug on the end that connects to the horn relay via a bullet connector. That wire can be replaced by removing the horn ring and pulling it out through the center of the column. To remove the horn ring first disconnect the battery, then push down on the horn ring and rotate counter-clockwise, it will then lift off (now take pictures of the assembly) Pull the wire out of the center of the steering column and fabricate a new one. You may need to reuse the button end of the wire, simply cut the button portion off leaving about 2" on the button, solder a new wire onto the button wire, be sure to cover is with shrink tube insulation. Add a bullet plug to the other end and plug it into the bullet connector that goes to the horn relay. You can feed it back down the tube with ease.

You really do need a new wiring harness from YnZ. I rewired my 54 in 2009 with a harness from YnZ, l had them add a circuit for; electric fuel pump, fog lights, and spot light. YnZ will have anything you need to accomplish this task. I had never rewired a car before, their instructions were great and it turned out perfect. The most difficult task was removing and replacing the nuts behind the dash that hold the instrument cluster on.

Last but not least. If you have not already done so you should join the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club, it will be the best money you will spend if you own a Hudson, Essex, or Terraplane automobile. Join here at HETCLUB.ORG

    Hope this helps,
