51 Commodore Project

Just wanted to log the progress on this car I’ve obtained through a trade. Had a bad clutch chatter and squishy floor pans.

hoping for any advice I can get WildRicks has been a godsend and got me the clutch parts I needed. After much searching I found a machine shop to clean up my flywheel.

all in all this car is pretty clean, just trying to improve it where I can. Any and all advice is much appreciated.

clutch pretty tore up

after several hours of pressure washing and oven cleaner, was finally able to dress her up and replace all the seals.

Before of the floor pans. My first time fabricating and welding something like this in. Was a rough day to say the least, but satisfying.

found a new ring gear on fleabay, had the flywheel turned. I told them to be gentle but they wound up taking off about .014. They didn’t grind the mounting bolts, hopefully that won’t be a problem… :O

New clutch installed. I used permetex slightly where the flange of the grind meets the unground flange, to hopefully fill the gap for the gasket.

currently, was in the middle of installing a new cross shaft in the bell housing, ran into a brick wall, as when I install the pins, the shaft locks up. It’s pulling the paddles and fingers into each other, and clamping down on the bell housing.

wondering if I should grind a bit off the paddles mount to make a little extra space, or did I get a wrong part? It’s only like an 1/8 inch off.

Awesome progress on this! Especially on those floor pans, that's a big job.

I hope your permatex helps seal the gap with the ground and unground spots as well.

My car is an auto so I don't have any experience with these clutches but 1/8" sounds like a lot to me. Have you checked the measurements to the Mechanical Procedure Manual's specs in chapter 7-6? It helps measure distorted covers, fingers, pressure plates, and flywheels. 7-7 also covers making measurements during install to ensure adjustments are made to the assembly, cover, springs, and fingers.

Maybe something in there will be useful. Sorry I can't be more help.
