Cooling water dripping out from grease cup. 1920 Hudson

I am using a water resistant marine grease of good quality for the waterpump. Still, after a drive of some 30 km the water start seaping out from the grease cup.

What to do??

Thanks for any advice /gert

  • So it’s not leaking from the two gland nuts on the shaft ?

  • No, they are tight. Definitely it is dripping from the grease cup. it stops once i turn the cup like 90 degree, but starts dripping again once the motor has been running for a quarter of an hour or so.

  • Ok. Replace grease cup with a Zurk or a modern grease nipple.

Interesting that in 1927 they eliminated the rear grease cup, with no adverse affect on the bushing. Put a plug in and use soluble oil in the radiator (about a pint).

  • Thanks for usefull advice.

wondering, the grease does obviously end up in the coolant. Doesn't that cause any problem in the long run?

Yes, it will clog up your radiator eventually. Pays to use a good radiator flush.

  • Thanks Geoff
