wiring question

On my 1954 Hornet, I had to replace my directional switch. There are 6 wires coming from the switch to a junction block. However, there are 8 wires in the back of the block. What is the reason? Also in replacing the flasher for the directionals does It have to be positive ground

I remember the same for my 53, two unused terminals on that block.

As far as the flasher module, I always assumed the thermal plates didn't care about direction of ground but it does matter whether they are made for 6v or 12v.

This is a diagram from another post for 52-53 which might be the same as 54. If I recall correctly, there are two posts on my 53 that are not used.

I took a look under the dash on my 53 Hornet. There are 2 spots on the connector between 5 and 6 in the diagram above, but the terminals are not used.
