1951- square or round tank radiator?

I was under the impression that all 51's had round radiator tanks, but I just saw an old junk radiator at Dave S. garage that had a 51 tag on it and it was square. It didn't appear to be tampered with. I am guessing that they used whatever square tanks they had left in 51 and then went to the newer production round ones. Does anyone know for sure?

'51 had a square tank. Model year is in large numbers on the tag. I believe '52 was first year for the rounded tanks ... likely because they either started using a pressure cap or went to a higher pressure cap. The square tanks tend to "oil can" with a pressure cap. Mine flexed enough that it eventually cracked the solder on the overflow tube where it leaves the filler neck!
  • That might have happened on my 50 at one point, the overflow was separated from the neck, and I always figured it was from poor handling and storage, go figure...

But it didn't take me long to know what you were talking about when you said oil can...

Ditto my '51 Hornet. Square tank, dislocated overflow tube. Walt-LA
