canvas inner fender skirting

Does any one have a picture of how the canvas skirting that goes on the front inner fenders attaches?

I am not sure wheather it goes on the engine side or the wheel side of the inner fender, and how it hangs and ties on.

It goes on the outside of the inner fender and was originally stapled on. You should be able to find the staple holes. Function was to keep dust and splash from getting in thru the upper A-frame hole.

Dunno.... The splash guard on my '51 Hornet appears to be original, and is stapled onto the engine side of the inner fender. The bottom of it passes beltween the sub frame and the inner fender and is weighted with a flat bar to hold it down. How does it hang when mounted on the outside? Am going to replace mine, and would like to get it in correctly.

The 54 I just finished had the canvas stapled to the engine side also. The flat bar that goes through the bottom pocket has one hole in the end and is screwed to the chassis. Which end that was? can't remember... Probably the rear? There are two "strings" attached that are tied under the control arm to try to keep the ends closed. The originals were pretty good and were sent to Danny Spring to use as patterns for the ones you buy from Kgap. I used some stainless steel safety wire to make my replacement staples and they look like originals. good Luck, Dave w.
  • Thanks Guys! What was confusing me was the brake line, it seemed there should have been another slit in the material.

The orginal material was substantially heavier than what K-Gap sells. I finally had my own made at a cavas shop.

The skirting came with the Hudson when I bought it. It was made by Full Line and is black and not a greenish grey like some of the skirting I've seen. I know Full lLine has been out of business for a while. As to the weight, I do not know how it compares to K-Gap.

Here's a nice picture of a NOS inner fender for the short wheelbase stepdowns.

  • My '50 Pacemaker also has them mounted on the engine side. Not sure if I'm going to keep them though.

  • When KGAP decided to make the cloth splash guards, we did quite a bit of research and measured quite a few original splash guards from many different years and models of Hudsons. Like Dave said, we even used his orginal set to comfirm that our pattern and thickness of fabric was inline with the orginal Hudson product.

Many have been sold and only a couple of people have complained of the thickness of the product that we sell. Only one of those people took the time to contact us and voice their opinion. Our policy is if your not satified with the product, send it back and we will refund your money.

We have found fabric that is heavier than the first couple of batches we made, and any future orders will be with the heavier fabric.

It's just my opinion, but for what it's worth.. I suspect that the canvas was bought on the surplus market left over from WW2. That's why the color was kinda greenish. The function certainly didn't call for much consistancy in quality or appearance. Also I bet the quality (threads per inch)varied with the source at the time. The original canvas on my 49 does appear to be a bit heavier, but the 54 did too untill I peeled all the factory undercoating off.

I really doubt that all the cars from 48 thru 54 had exactly the same fabric.. Like I said..just my opinion ..
