until 1929 with the introduction of the Essex-based Dover, Hudson did not build a production truck for the consumer market, though there are many examples of earlier hudson trucks which were built by outside firms or homemade 'farm' trucks. Many worthless old cars were converted to trucks to obtain higher gas rations during WWII.

Commercial shippments, (production figures havn't been found) are as follows:

    (Dover)

    1929 - 2,130

    (Essex)

1930 - 1,066 (Unclear if Dover was also produced in 1930)

    1931 - 720

    1932 - 412

    (Essex-Terraplane)

    1933 - 430

    Terrplane - 1934-1938

    1934 - 1901

    1935 - 1,281

    1936 - 4,548

    1937 - 8,058

    1938 - 808

    Hudson - 1939-1947

    1939 - 640

    1940 - 1,035

    1941 - 812

1942 - 67 (Production curtailed due to WWII)

    1946 - 3,104 (Pickup trucks only)

    1947 - 2,917 (Pickup trucks only)

Between 1929 and 1942 Commercial shipment figures include everything - pickup trucks, panel trucks, taxi cabs and anything else built for use as a commercial vehicle.

  • Alex, Are there any examples in existance of the 40-1 all purpose delivery van left? I've never seen one in the flesh and I wondered if anyone else has. Seems as if I remember Willys had a very similiar looking vehicle. Maybe they were produced under contract{?}
  • hi, would that make my 37 bus. coupe #2108 of 8,058 produced in 1937 ?
  • I'll try and get some numbers off the truck but it will be late this weekend until i can.

It can from family and I was told it was a 27 but maybe it's a 29.

Either way how popular are they? Is it wort restoring or selling as is or parting it out? How expensive are parts to restore it close to orginal.

    Thanks in advance Dan
  • If what you have is a true Hudson Truck from the 20's, I sure would love to see some pictures. You may have a one of a kind worth more money then you have ever seen. Good luck, Ron
  • I looked at the truck late last night and tried to find the vin and data plate info but I can't seem to find it . Does anyone know where the data plate is located? I also noticed that most Hudsons in the 20's came with a 6 cyl this has a flat head four cyl is this correct for the year? I was told the truck has never been touched it was driven it to a barn over 50 years ago and hasn't seen daylight since.

There is some question as to wether these were even produced. There was a discusion here on the bulletin board back in May 2005 - at that time Jon B posted these photos of a Willy's Van:

    http://groups.msn.com/HudsonEssexTerraplaneBulletinBoard/hudsontrucks.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=1966

I have never seen one of these either - if, as Jon suggests, the Hudson van was a Willy's with a different grille, then I'd suggest that what is shown in the next photo at the above web site was a design study. I don't think Hudson built any.

Vehicle's came off the production line in serial number sequence; ie, 101, 102, 103, etc. Body styles were added to the frames as they were produced. So there might have been, say, 3 sedans, a coupe, a pickup truck, sedan, sedan, business coupe and so on. As far as I know there wasn't a seperate production line for commercial vehicles. Whatever differences between the passenger cars and commercial vehicles was, to the best of my knowledge, done on a single line. Commercial vehicles may have been shunted to another line for finishing, but that would is most likely the extent of it.

  • I found a picture of what the truck looked like years ago online. I'll get a real picture sometime this weekend. This was listed as a 27 hudson online with metal sides there was also a 27 with wood sides. Is this a 29 or is it something different? Also where on the truck can I find some info the data plate or production #.? The bed of the has a canvas cover it's not metal the bed itself is metal .
  • Look for the data plate in the center of the firewall; behind and slightly above the center of the engine. Did you say it was a 4 cylinder engine? The Hudson line didn't have a 4 since the teens and even essex was a 6 since the early 20's. Does it say Hudson on the top front of the radiator?

Please post some pictures of your truck.

    Have a nice day

    Steve:rolleyes:

This is a pic of a '29 Dover. These were based on Essex mechanicals, and the early versions had left-over '28 Essex dash panels. Strangely, they reverted to horizontal radiator shutters, and had a special radiator shell and headlamps, exclusive to Dover.
