Center Driveshaft Support Bearing Loose?????
( 49 Hudson Commodore ) - I was under it today and looked at the center driveshaft support. I grabbed the driveshaft and was able to move it upward. Seems there are two rubber bushings riveted to a collar that goes around the driveshaft, but those rubber bushings are not firmly mounted to the base that is bolted to the frame. One side was totally loose, and the other side was just pressed in. This does not seem right. What keeps the driveshaft from moving upwards? I strapped the center bearing collar to the base so that now the rubber bushings are held in place and the collar can not move upwards.
Was there originally a part of this assembly that held the rubber bushings into their mating pockets in the mount? How did this assembly function? Is mine defective, or is it just me that is defective? I am talking about the collar that holds the driveshaft where the two sections join.
By the way, after strapping the collar down, the slight "chatter" or "shutter" in the driveline that I thought was the clutch went away.

K-GAP sells these supports. Seems that yours have come apart. The pair of them have 5/16 studs on each end.0

Go to my website... the URL is below and check out how to repair the center bearing cushions with a permanent fix.... Cheers from Heart Of Texas0 -
gary, the rubber bushings have a stud moulded in on each end. these bolt the bearing assembly to the frame through the bracketry. here is a sketch from the mechanical procedure which shows the whole assembly as it should be.0

THANKS GUYS!
Nick S - the diagram made the assembly make sense. It seems mine has pulled the mounting bolt out of the end of the center driveshaft support cushion. What is wierd is that one cushion the bolt pulled out of the top, and on the other it pulled out of the bottom.
Billy K - I got on K-Gap's web site and ordered a set of the replacement cushions. Wish K-Gap were set up to accept charge cards, but I can wait till they receive my check and then ship the parts.
Ken - I ALWAYS look at your stepdown site for guidance, but I missed that one. Guess I did not relate the diagram to my issue. I am going to use the K-Gap replacement parts, but will file this neat fix for a future failure.
Guess this is a common problem?
Anyway, THANKS for the directions and insight! It is greatly appreciated. Don't know how someone would figure this stuff out ( like how to change the clutch fluid ) without this forum's expertise.

Chris,
You should order a shop manual from the HET Club store. They don't always tell you the whole story, but it will certainly help out most times.0 -
But then I would have to actually "READ" the manual. What guy reads manuals? I am ashamed to say that I had already purchased a manual from the HET store when I started the restoration three years ago. The manual is still in pristine condition!
