1948 Commodore Six - single lever tranny. Not sure about the "bunch of stuff". According to one set of figures I have there were 27,159 Commodore 6's made - don't have breakdown by body style.

By 'bunch of stuff' could you mean Drive-Master....or even Super-Matic? Like: a big vacuum cylinder mounted to the side of the engine block?
  • check out the under hood stuff @ http://davidh.photosite.com/48hudson/

maybe even a oil injector jar too. humm !

Sure looks like Drivemaster to me.

I'm not seeing an oil injector. I do see a washer fluid jar, glass bowl gas filter, oil filter and Drivemaster vacuum shift mechanism. If I may make a suggestion, and assuming you're going to restore or part out this car, perhaps you should consider power washing the engine compartment before you begin. Make sure to cover the carburetor first.
  • what is the jar on the passenger side of the firewall with the curled tube going to dual fittings at the bse of the carb on page 2 ?

cleaning and pressure washing will come this weekend when everyone has a few extra minutes. someone is interested in the front clip and i think imentioned that i thought i wanted the engine for my pickup or the boys 46 commodore. his is a nice runnign 212 but who knows how long it will last. . the truck also has a 212 of course but i cannot get it to even pop, even with starting fluid. unsure exactly what its problem is but it does get spark and crank with the starter. have not checked the timing yet. its been so beastly hot out up north here. however tomorrow we expect highs in the 60's. what a switch. .

is there any market for the drivemaster stuff for a single lever transmission ? will not throw anything away that cannot be replaced over the counter. is my barn ever full of crap. . . the widow will have a great auction someday.

OK, I missed that. It looks like either an oil or water injector. Looks like fluid (?) is in the jar. Have you checked to see what it may be? As far as the Drivemaster goes, my car is a 53 and doesn't have a manual trans so I can't use it. But if the price were right, I'd pick it up for kicks/posterity. However, even if someone may be able to actually use it, I'm sure rebuilding would be required. As far as your vehicle which won't start goes, all it usually takes is fresh gasoline and a good spark to ignite it. Good luck with your projects.
  • hello, i love your heard of hudson,s pics. that drivemaster is a wild set up, do they work good when serviced and maintained ?:D

The jar on the firewall is a Marvel Mystery Oil/top cylinder lube injector. It looks to be the one manufactured by AMPCO. But that would be very hard to tell from the picture.

The interesting thing is how the oil feed is split into the 2 barrels of the carburetor. Usually the feed goes into the manifold below the throttle plates. Rather neat

It's real unusual to find a Hudson with all the goodies that yours has thats been sitting and complete. As has been previously alluded to the appartus on the drivers side of the engine is a Drivemaster. I has a rather compilcated shifting mechanism and does have single link or rod shifter. It's very interesting how they engineered all that stuff to work just to compete with Gm's introduction of hydromatic trans. They are a challenge to make work properly, I bought a Drivemaster manuel and still couldn't get it to function properly on my 49 Commodre and has the beginneing serial number of492. I found the straight standard linkage and removed all of the D'mstr stuff. The "WTN" had an article by a regular contributor, Mr. Schmitt, who says D'mstr is not at all difficult to maintain. I believe he lives in Wisconsin as well. There's only a small group of guys that are still with us that can rebuild and make them work.Is the car beyond restoration? I hate to see complete cars parted out.

Well, that's my 20 cents worth, thanks for letting me paticipate.

Thanks for sharing the link to the pictures.

Reminds me a ton of the way my 49 looked when I got it!

Are these current or are you well on your way through the tear down?
  • i was going to make parts out of it but after halfast checking it out underside i m reluctant to do that. all i needed was the motor and transmission for my pickup. maybe someone should make it new again. im too many projects into other things to even think of doing that. are there any interests out there that may have a decent engine and od transmission ? i would certainly listen to ideas.
