Drive your Hudson campaign... this weekend!
Here's everyone's task for this Holiday weekend...
if your Hudson (or Hudsons... ) is of the running, your goal this weekend is to drive it somewhere, get it out, enjoy it.
Then to prove you have complied, you need to post a picture of it out and about.
I'll be getting mine out this weekend, but we're pulling the hood off to do some sandblasting on it.... But I'll still count that as an outing!
Let's see how everyone does!

I don't think my Pacemaker is coming out this weekend, unless I can put it on a pontoon boat! This is my first three day weekend this year, with nothing but rain in the forecast! I could be an optimist....I could wet sand my Hornet outside this weekend fairly easily!0

Very interesting post. I just got the insurance card for the 31 coupe and was thinking I should pick up some antique plates today so I could drive the car this weekend. Maybe there's something in the air.
Have a nice day

See everyone? now that's the spirit. When life gives you lemons, make some lemonade!0 -
It looks like we're going to get some of Jay's "but it's a dry heat" weather this weekend. Too bad mine is still at the paint shop.

pulling the hood off does not constitute an excuse to not drive it.
one of my absolute favorite trips was hoodless. the day the twin-h went on we pulled the hood to have a little extra working room. got the carbs set and transmission readjusted in time for the weekly cruise about 15 miles away. seemed to be a good place for a test run.
with the hood off, it made it much easier for people to ogle the engine, kinda funny to watch them looking all around the car to see where i set the hood. though the best part of the evening was some guy a couple spaces away with his 427 race vette sitting on the trailer it was drug in on (that's really the spirit of a cruise lol) anyway that hotshot decided to rev up that big block and make a little noise, well sporting guy i am, fired up that little six and stole his thunder. those lake pipes just couldn't compete with a 2 1/4" x 12" long straight pipe:p . he turned the vette off for the night.
now i won't argue that he wouldn't out run and out handle me if he actually took the vette off the trailer, but i think i stood a pretty good chance against that loaded down 3/4 ton pickup.0 -
I'll be a Ruby's tonight in Redondo Beach and then over to Ricky and Ronnies in Torrance........ I'm sure I'll find one of those tatooed, Rat rod, rockabilly, fishnet girls that will want to enjoy my company. If not, I'll heckle the 52 Chevy lowrider boys.0

Count me in, Hudsonkid- I'll be going to the Unfinished Nationals in beautiful Elma, Washington on Saturday- about 80 miles roundtrip, in the '48 coupe. As opposed to other shows, this one is bring your projects, your junk on a trailer that you have a vision for, whatever- you get lots more "doer" type guys than rich guys with trailer queen cars, and lots of good discussions. There will be some finished, gorgeous cars there as well, and we ratters try not to look down our noses at them, at least not to their faces.
And, thanks to your post the other day on posting pics, I may even get my nerve up to try that, too. You're just a little beacon of inspiration around here.0 -
My Terraplane has about a week left in the upholstery shop. The windlace, headliner, rear seat, and armrests are all in. The side & door panels and front seat, along with the rear carpeting should all be in next week. So, the TP isn't coming out for at least a week anyway.
But, the '66 Coronet is going for a long drive to Dallas on Saturday.0 -

I never drove it hoodless, but that's an idea....
but some of the best runs are those "test drives". I think starting up the twin h for the first time was a pretty exciting time.
As far as not driving it, I'll still drive it for a bit, just wondering if it is going to be dry for a little bit of the weekend. :mad:0 -
Wish mine was running! guess I could push the hulk out into the driveway, but think the neighbors may raise some hell about that!
Going to try and get down to Al's next weekend and pick up the donor and bring her home.0 -

Are you (or any other "Hudsonites" that you know of) going to the Route 66 Rendezvous in San Bernardino (Sept. 14-17)? Terry0 -

I didn't know anything about it.... sounds like a great time. Do you have any info on it? I know the all California Hudson meet is Sept 15 and 16 in San Simeon. Seems like the Hudsonites would have been better served by perhaps coordinating it around this rendezvous. I was planning on going to the Hudson meet just on the 15th. I'd love to find out more on this Route 66 deal. I think it is important that Hudson is represented. Please let me know what info you have on it. Thanks, Niels0 -

This is the biggest car show/cruise in this area, that I am aware of. There are already 1600 cars pre-registered for it, including me. It's mostly muscle cars and hot rods, but there is always a large representation of the classics as well. I had a booth/exhibit there a couple of years ago and there was over 450,000 spectators over the 4 days. Last year I was one of two Hudsons out of over 2100 cars. It would be great to have more of us there, but it is a conflict with the San Simeon event. San Simeon does offer a little better climate, but do they have the chicks with tats?Their web site is www.route-66.org

Seems a shame that the club doesn't coordinate things like this. I just got back from tonight's cruise and a guy asked me if Hudson owners ever had a meet. He said they should advertise as he would love to attend. There are lots of free car publications outthere. He's a Buick guy but sure likes and knows the Hudsons. Thanks for the info. I'm going to check out the website. I'd love to go atleast one day.
P.S. everyone loved my Bali Blue 51 Hornet Coupe with Calif personalized plates "Doc Hudsn" ! I'll post a pic in a couple days.0 -
drove my 40 Hudson Pickup to the Parts store and bought a new floor jack today. my good old one gave out and needs a rebuild. the boys washed y 53 conv and got it ready for the DONUT GANG MEET every sunday in Fontana, we are jam packed wilth the NASCAR CROWD for the big Fontana race Sunday. Gettilng my Bali Blue Hollywood ready for the San Simeon run in two weeks. going to get away from the 1600 cars in San Berdoo route 66 meet. and take a safe and sane trip up the coast. the best run of the year, except for the Laughlin economy run, Drive my Hudsons everyday. I take my 49 Commodore to the CLASSIC CHEVY CLUB get together every Saturday. Also take it to numerous car shows and to cruises. Those 55, 56, 57 Chevy Guys get upset with all the attention the Hudson gets at these events.

Web will be out there!,
Well I got lucky and found some time Friday and Saturday to replace the old disrtibutor with a 55 distributor I modified with a Petronix unit and replacing the pinion seal in my 49 Super Six. The distributor was the most difficult since the counterweight mechanism was worn out very badly. I had to braze up all the holes and redrill. I have no idea what my advance curve is, but it starts and runs much better than before. No drips from the rear end.. Seal number was CR17035. A little thinner than the old Fitzgerald seal I removed, but seems to work OK. The good news is, Today we are taking a pleasure ride South towards Vero Beach to check out out favorite antique and second hand stores. So if you see our green "Miss Daisy" along US 1 in central Fl.. Honk!

Postscript (see my earlier post)- went to the Unfinished Nats yesterday, and a fine time was had by all. I have kind of fallen in with a group of local rodders in my age group (we look for places with senior menu when we stop for dinner, but some younger ones too)- we found a spot with some shade (temps in the mid 90's yesterday), and lied a lot about the good old days. Lots of interest in my custom '48 (one old guy tried to convince me I had "electric shift", just not hooked up
. There was one other Hudson at the meet- a '54 Hornet 4D, in "working clothes"- the owner was one of the less friendly folks I found- he seemed irritated that I had interrupted his conversation with his cronies. Takes all kinds, I guess. I'm always surprised when someone can successfully resist my witty banter.

Great story Mike. There's an older guy here with a Custom Merc that wants to see my Hudson, his father used to drive one. He was really nice to talk with. I find it really interesting to talk with those guys from the 50's (my father's era) and 60's hot rod days. If you don't act like a punk, they will talk with you for hours and seem to be glad you take an interest in their cars.0

I do not know if this qualifies as driving your Hudson, but since it stopped raining in PA I started the Commodore and backed it out of the garage. I would have liked to have taken a drive but with no glass, fenders, hood, seat, or inspection sticker I know the minute I pulled onto the highway a State Trooper would have been coming the other way. I would probably have to take out a large loan just to pay the fine. I did let it sit at the edge of the drive for a while to let passing motorists see how a Hudson unibody is constructed.
Tried to post a picture but the forums photo gallery is under construction, and since I don't use IE the MSN site will not let me register. Hopefully by next labor day weekend it will be on the road.0 -

The only stepdown I ever drove was my grandfather's '52 Convertible that was in about the same stage of completion. (This was back in 1990 or '91) There were no PA State Troopers anywhere near his home, so a road trip a mile up and back the road wasn't out of the question.
No hood, doors or seat makes for an exciting Hudson ride!0 -

Nice looking car Gary. Is that a stock Hudson color? I'm still trying to find out what their "revue red" looked liked, just haven't had time to try to get a formula and get it mixed.0 -
Okay, after I started this, I guess I have failed you all..... I went to start my hudson today, and ran into a problem. It was making an odd noise form the front of the engine, and i shut her down to investigate. Couldn't find anything unusual, so I started it up again, and listened a bit more intently. Well, sounds like I got a bad generator bearing or something, and figured it's not worth the risk of driving it around. So, I took the belt off, spun the generator, and sure enough, major roughness... pulley had a ton of play. Guess it's time to tear it down, and give it a look see.
Me and hudsondad were going to run to Kauffman's Chicken Bar B Que and car show tomorrow, and looks like now we're taking a ride over in the Tahoe.
I feel bad gearing everyone up for a drive it campaign, and I cannot deliver on the statement. Ouch.... Sorry guys....0 -

The Red is a 1988 Chrysler Claret Red B8821K
The Cream is a 1986 Chrysler Light Cream B8672K
I had paint chips from the 1949 Hudson and the red closely matched a stock Hudson color. The cream also closely matched the cream used on the two tone Hudsons. I was told that many dealers did the two tone paints upon customer request. I was told that by a person that was knowledgeable about Hudsons, but I was unable to verify that statement.

Well, It stopped raining here in Virginia and I pulled the pacemaker out yesterday with the intentions of driving it to work this morning. At the last minute I decided NOT to drive her, opting to jump in my AMC Concord. I didn't make it 2 miles when a deer jumped out and I hit it on the passenger side. She took out the fender and maybe the door. It looks like the Hornet is on hold until I can get this thing fixed, as the headlight is signaling airplanes. There is a picture of my Concord on Hudsonkid's "DOC'S Meet". It is in the background.....sob.....0

Well, so far this wekend, I have driven 3 of my Hudson's (If you count an Essex as a Hudson). Today wife and I are taking our 52 out for a get aquainted run. The car is just going back together and I need to "get Aquainted" with it all over again.... well any excuse to drive it is GREAT!0
