breather cranks

I've noticed that in the (hopefully) attatched picture, the oil bath air cleaners are tightened down on the carbeurator throats with what appears to be a little hand crank.

This is the only place I've seen these before, and was wondering if this was the way the factory did it, and maybe most of them got replaced over the years with a simple machine screw, like the ones I have on all the air cleaners in my cars, or was this some individual "upgrade".

Anyone else got a car with this feature on the air cleaners ??

the attachment missed, but yes i've had a long threaded rod bent to a small handle on single carb air cleaners.
  • picture didn't upload -- guess I'll try again.

I have never seen that, but it looks like a great idea. Not only can you remove one in a hurry without tools, the fact that it is off center, keeps the screw from backing out under vibration. Gonna make some for my twin H..

  • I've seen these too. However, I can't find any reference to them in any of my manuals or literature. Even with these cranks in place, wouldn't a wrench be need to remove the bolt that holds the silencer to intake manifold bracket?
  • I guess one would have to scour the old factory photos of twin H engines to find the answer to this one. (whether or not its factory issue). If anyone can find an old black & white photo from the period, showing these cranks, or lack of them, I'd appreciate a copy posted here. I'll have this one rattling around in my head now until its answered one way or another.

    Thanks,

  • Sorry, I can't figure out why the twins pic won't show, but no cranks in the twin h twins pic

Mine doesn't have the bolt at all(but obviously did at one time).

It has a stainless band on the air cleaner and a bracket on the carb

with a spring in between holding them together.

No idea where this setup came from but it works well. The air cleaners

which show no signs of ever having been reworked don't have the yellow

oval around the twinHpower lettering either. Anyone know what the deal

    is with that?
