Exhaust Whistle

Dave,
I have a 31 Model A Ford with a stock four cylinder motor. I installed an old original whistle with mixed results. The original "cut out" exhaust valve that came with it was placed in between the outlet of the manifold and the inlet of the exhaust pipe. It was made for the Ford, and had the proper flanged or "flared" connections. The problem I had with that setup was it was the several inch increased length it added to the outlet. The pipe would be at a slight angle causing exhaust leakes. If I had cut the equivalent length out of the pipe, it would have worked. I didn't want to modify the exhaust system because it's an Aries one piece stainless system. Very expensive and I don't have a Tig welder.. I did however get it to work by making an adapter and placing the whistle at the end of the tail pipe. No modification of the expensive system and it is louder since it's under the car rather than under the bonnet. It required a little bracing to stay tight. I was worried about loseing it! it is an original. An elderly neighbor flagged me down one day and gave it to me. Said he had it for over fifty years. He said he enjoyed watching me drive by.. He used to have one just like mine.. I would always "whistle " when i passed his house and if he was on the front porch, he would wave.. We both had some fun. He's gone now but not forgotten. I bet these new neighbors wonder why I whistle when passing!
have Fun!

I have had a couple cars with exhaust whistles. THe trick is to make sure you have the correct valve. It is not the same as a normal cut out. a normal cutout only opens the exhaust system while the valve routes the exhaust to the whistle. Also, the foot controll is not the way to go. What you need to do is hook up a cable pull so you can modulate the exhaust flow to play toons... you can't do that very well with a foot control.
I must admit I have never seen one on a 28 Essex. They are usually on earlier cars but I see no reson why it won't work.0
