exhaust flange

A previous owner replaced the twin-h setup on my ’53 Hornet with a single carb set-up from a ’55 or ’56. I have acquired a twin-h set-up and will be reinstalling it soon. Is the exhaust flange on the ’53 manifold different from the one on the ’55? An if so, does anyone have one?

a 55-56 exhaust is not compatible with a 48-54 intake and vise versa, if that is your question. as a pair the 55-56 manifold set can be used on a stepdown. Also if moving from one to the other the outlet flange is 2" for stepdowns and 2 1/4 hash. The outlet is reoriented and moved so some exhaust work is necessary to make the pipes fit.
  • I have a complete 48-54 intake and exaust setup to replace the 55-56 manifold set. My question concerned the exhaust flange. So according to you, I do need a new flange on my exhaust pipe to mate with the exhaust manifold. I assumed that some exhaust work will be necessary. Does anyone have a flange?

I'd put a set of 2 pipe headers on it, no heat problems, more power, no vaporlock. Cast holds much heat, with headers the heat is not as intense, The reinstallation of Twin H will bring it back to life. "Good" headers are not cheap but very much worth the investment and adds to the endurance and life of the engine, less heat. Thanks for letting me share.

Jim, there is nothing magical about the flange, any local exhaust shop should be able to help you out. arrange an appointment to replace the piece of pipe from the manifold back to the transmission you'll be dealing with the diameter difference anyway, (seams most shops put a joint there)
if it is the cast iron outlet that you need, then yes you will need to find one, they are the same both twin h and single carb 48-54. so it shouldn't be too bad a task to find one. also there are simulated 7x outlet castings floating around.

Another further clarification for anyone thinking of making a conversion using a 55 and up twin H on a stepdown body.. You can't interchange the exhaust outlet. Sometimes it's called the exhaust adapter. This is the part that bolts on to the main manifold with three bolts and the exhaust pipe flange bolts to with two bolts. The early outlet fits the early manifold only and vice versa. In other words you must use a complete early or a complete late exhaust set up. Also the dual exhaust outlet sold as "7X twin Exhaust" outlet as seen in the WTN Classifieds fits 48-54 manifolds only AND is not a true 7X product. 7X exhaust is a completely different animal.

Live in the past, It's cheaper!

Bruce Silva, who is near you in Sacramento, (100 miles is close in California) sells brand new headers for Hornets. He had them at the Reno National last year and they looked really good. His phone number is (916) 451-2305
