49 Restoration; Update of sorts....

A few of the board members have emailed me asking how my restoration on my 49 Comm Conv Brougham is going. Sooo.......all in all it is coming along great. Problem is I changed careers and the new job that pays the bills is taking 99% of my time and things have slowed to a snails pace. I cannot even go to Hershey this year, which has me bummed.

The body work and paint should be done by Thanksgiving, give or a take a month. Ok, lets say Christmas. I will still have to wet sand and buff it all, but I am in no hurry to do all that anytime soon. The engine & trans are done and thus far, everything looks great. I did the engine myself and ended up having to have it bored out .030 and used new pistons, valves, springs, etc. The line bore of the new mains came out great as did the babbit work on the rods. Checked and rechecked clearances and buttoned it all up and painted it after adjusting the valves etc. I rebuilt the generator, starter, carb and got a new water & fuel pumps from Dave K. The clutch is on its way to Doug Wildrick in Indiana to be gone over, and I decided to let Al Saffrahn go through the trans which he did nicely. I have it painted and will mate it with the engine once I get the clutch back.

I have the new harness from YNZ and will start on that once I have all the body work done and my shop is sanding dust free. I am in the process of installing the rubber seals on the inner fenders and plugging the various holes in the firewall with grommets from Steele and Restorations Specialties. The new firewall pad from Quiet Ride Solutions is beautiful, and if you need a new one I highly recommend it. Very nice repro for only $150. Long since finished all the brake lines etc, and have to pick up the new hydrolic lines I had made for the top cylinders. Dash still has to be clear coated but woodgraining is done and I am more than pleased with the way it came out.

Sooo, the engine and trans will go back in soon and by Spring I hope it will resemble a car again. Have to have the driveshaft shortened as I have added overdrive, which my car did not originally have. Have not touched the top assembly yet, which is another animal. Want to paint the header, rechrome the irons and polish the stainless. Just realized while writing this that I have a long way to go....sigh. I just remembered I cannot put the steering column back together until I get it to the chromer. Sometimes it seems endless.

I have not updated my picture pages in months and I have tons of pictures that I will post on a new site I have been working on , but once again, there is that job thing (I feel your pain Rambo) and the site it is not high on the priority list. I am really not b***ing and whining, truly having fun with it all.

  • I almost forgot, does anyone know a source for the "covers" that are stapled to the inner fender to cover the A-Arms??? I heard that someone used to reproduce them, but I know they are not in the K Gap catalog. I always thought they were rubber, but have since learned they are sort of like a heavy burlap material.

If there is not a source, can someone tell me what they have done to make them and whether or not you have the pattern??? I am looking to reproduce what the factory did (for my sick mind, not for show points) as close as possible.

THANKS as always for any feedback.

Great to hear about your progress. Sounds like you're well on your way to one of those Monterey Classic Auction 110k+ Convertible Restorations!

The forum was down a few weeks ago and I was in a motivational-tailspin-funk and was looking through my Hudson links to get myself revved up and ran across your 49 picture page and was dissappointed there hadn't been any updates!

But changing careers/jobs is not an easy thing to do and neither is saying no to the new boss ~ :) Work does have its rewards though - money - hopefully more than enough to live on and still buy parts to finish the Hudson otherwise it turns out to be something like...

Feed yourself - Starve the Hudson or is it Starve yourself and Feed the Hudson!

    Dennis,

These canvas pieces are indeed reproduced by K-Gap. I saw them at the Nationals at their booth, and they look really nice.
