no spark !/previous post starter bolt.

Been able to get the starter to mesh into the flywheel of the '50 Commodore 6, and it turns over quite well ! But-- no spark ! The wiring is shot ! Good plugs, and cables, no spark from the points! Is there a way to buypass all that bad wiring and try direct power to the coil, and hotwire it to get spark ? Original 6volt, positive ground. I know if I get spark , it would start right up.

The '50 Hudson starter set up is great, as you can just push a button on the starter solenoid and turn the engine over by yourself! But the fun part is getting it running after setting for 6 years!

    Don't do this til someone else verifies its right, but I think you could run a wire from the neg post of battery to the non-distributor side of the coil (disconnect whats attached to that post now), then push the magic starter button, and you should have lift-off. Of course, it will run until you disconnect the "jumper" wire.

    Mike, That will work, but I would put some kind of switch in the line from the battery to the coil,then you can turn it off with the switch.

    I hasatate to respond as i just had two senior members question what i said but here goes. You did not say but will the engine turn over with the starter button inside the car? When you turn on the ingition switch is there power to the coil? You can check this with a test light or volt meter. Do you have over drive? if so on the distrubetor side of the coil there are two wires one going to the distrubetor and one going to the interrupt post of the kickdown switch. if the switch is stuck or if the wire is grounded the car will not start, Dicconnect the one to the interrupt and leave it disconneted untill you have rewired the system. The button on the solanoid will not start the engine without the ingnition switch turned on.

    It has overdrive. The ignition switch is turned on. The oil and generator lights go on. The starter button on the dash sometimes sticks, so it has been avoided. When you connect the battery terminals, there is a clicking noise.It was mentioned in the first thread that the wiring was bad, many bare spots that were taped up. Ran a wire from negative battery, to negative coil.No spark. Tried negative to positive, nothing. Other wires from the coil were not disconnected yet. Thank you all for your suggestions! Electrical problems seem the most complicated!

    This is one of the situations where a little knowledge is dangerous. You need to determine where the clicking noise is. It could be the overdrive relay, or the soleniod. You need to run the "eye-ometer" over the entire system, under the hood and the dash, and lift the loom up from all the lugs that it goes through on the bulkhead, and down to the overdrive and kickdown. You need a wiring diagram too, but if you are not up with the play with electrics, then you do need expert assistance. The previous suggestions will work to get the car running, by disconnecting the existing wires from the coil. Make sure you label them, so you get them back correctly. Good luck,

    Yes! You don't want to let the smoke out of your wiring. It won't work properly then, and you'll have to recharge it with new smoke. Not long ago there was a jar of Lucas smoke on eBay (not kidding, it had a Lucas service part sticker and all.) Not sure if Hudson smoke is available or not.

    Talked to a fellow the other day who was restoring an old Austin Mini (you think the new Mini-Coopers are small. . .)- he referred to the electricals as the Lucas "Prince of Darkness" system.
