  • If its a hydramatic, sounds like internal leakage. After the 1-2 shift, does it feel like it goes into neutral? Sometimes they do that until it warms up. After being driven for several miles, It will shift and drive normal, but do the same thing again when cold. If this is the case, It would have to come out.

Hmm, what year car and what kind of transmission (stick or auto).
  • 1951 hudson hornet its an auto tranny
  • Low and reverse are completly mechanical in a hydro. You more than likley have a stuck valve body. If not that your clutchs are not working. How long has car been setting?.
  • about a year it goes in low and rev like nothing is wrong but in drive i have nothing

OK, I've had 2 cars with hydramatics with this problem. A '50 Olds and a "52 Hudson. This is right out of the Hydramatic manual:

Problem: transmission drives in 1st or 2nd but acts as if in neutral after shifting out of 2nd.

Cause: Rear clutch does not apply.

Caused by: Leakage in oil to clutch

    Leakage in valve body

drilled hole in trans case to oil delivery sleeve plugged

obstruction in oil delivery sleeve passage

oil delivery sleeve not located properly

    oil delivery sleeve ring broken

    clutch oil seal leakage

clutch piston stuck in release position

Right from General Motors in 1952. Hope this helps.
  • I definitly would check the valve body before I tore into anything else. If it ran ok before, not much of a chance that the rear clutch pack or anything mechanical would go bad from setting, but it could from you trying to move it. Almost forgot Check the fluid leve.l
