This is in rough shape but its still pretty neat. Like the original police equipment.

Looks to be some serious rust issues in the making...still if I could get it cheap (not the 10k BIN) it would be very cool to have an old Hudson Police car. I would restore it to as original Police specs as possible.
Dave S. needs another one for his stable doesn't he?0 -
What's a 49 Hudson Supreme????0

They did make a "Super" model - that's probably it...0 -

It comes with cheese and a large drink. :rolleyes:0 -

I agree Dan, that could be one cool cruiser restored original with all the cop garb! I'd probably still put flamethrowers on it though!0 -

Who needs a flame thrower? Back then the cops carried shotguns!0 -
Be nice to have this fully restored and whip down the road with the siren going. Be pretty sweet.0

Especially when stopped and arrested for impersonating a police officer. :eek:0 -

My brother is a Sergeant on the police force - it'd make a great present for him!0 -
The part about the "original Radar" seems a bit strange. I don't think the police used radar in the early fifties. Radar was just invented a few year prior to 49. The equipment was huge, heavy and mostly government classified.. Electronic timing yes. I have serious doubts that this was an original police car. Looks like a well worn old Super six four door much like mine. Looks like a lotta fun though.

If it's not a real police car, then somebody sure went through a whole lot of trouble to create that monster. I wouldn't base the fact that radar was new in '49 as a reason for questioning the car's authencity; the radar could have been added several years later as police cars weren't bought new every year.
I wouldn't go down the road with the siren flashing, but it might be a hit at a car show or parade.0 -

1949 would seem awful early for police radar. I didn't think the police used radar either, until late fifties/early sixties. I would think the State Police would have been first, before locals. Possibly a patent or build date on the radar equipment could verify if anyone was seriously interested. The equipment does appear to be vintage. The BIN price is off about 10 fold.0 -

WOW, you're a generous brother! If you ever need another brother, let me know and I'll send you my wish list.0 -
I was not aware that there were radar detectors avilable for police work then , I wonder where in Iowa it came from and why the regular tags, also the white paint is not deterioted like the black paint?????????0
-
I wouldn't be surpised if it is a real police car. It may have been in service for 20+ years like alot of other goverment equipment. Who knows what was added in that time.
Either way, it would be a sweet cruiser. I would leave it as original as possibly (bodywise). Make mechanical repairs, clean up the inside, get all of the equipment working and drive it.

I would hazard a guess that the radar was put in some time in the sixties the big box in the back of the trunk is part of it as well. The cage part looks newer as well. I think it probably saw over 20 years of service.
And Dave they have to catch me to arrest meif you see a scene on the cop show about chases with a 49 Hudson cop car running a state wide chase with a total nut job driving wave it might be me screaming along with the siren blaring and "Convoy" blasting out of the stereo....

For my part, I find this one fairly interesting. I've seen a few silly, fake police cars at shows and never understood the attraction. This one looks to me to be quite authentic. I don't doubt that the radar was added in later years, as I think that in rural areas a cruiser like this one could conceivably remain in service for quite a few years. We do all agree that Hudsons have great life expectancy, don't we? Despite issues of deterioration, I think we are all glad to see that this one survived at all. I'd love to see this one restored. '49 Super Six four-doors aren't the rarest of models, and, assuming that the car would sell at a realistic price, I think that a donor car with a decent body would make the project do-able. It might, in fact, be best to transfer all of the police features over to another car as long as the net effect is the same. It may not be a Jet convertible, but I'd like to see this one brought back into the fold.
By the way- I know that this car predated the 7X era severe usage parts, but what all do you guys think would have come different on this car from the factory? Leather seats, perhaps? Do you think that the factory offered heavier springs, U-joints, brakes, etc.? Are you surprised that it doesn't appear to have overdrive? Those are my thoughts, not that any of you asked...0 -
Actually, the big box in the trunk is a Motorola two way radio middle to late fifties. The radar pictured is also late fifties. The microphone and control head under the dast are proper for the radio box in the trunk, the speaker is sixties vintage. I didn't see the big Leech Neville alternator that was usually under the hood with a seperate regulator and rectifier box, also big. I used to work on some of these radios.

That's too funny.I can just see a 20 something year old rookie cop chasing a style of police car he's never seen before, complete with it's siren screeming and "Convoy" blasting. BTW, in looking at some old photos of my father at work (he was a policeman from the 50's to the 80's), I concure that the equipment in the Hudson appears to be late 50's or early 60's.

I am told by an old geezer that Hickory, NC (where I live) had Hudson police cars, but the impression I got was they used 54 Hudsons. I'll have to ask him to clarify what year model they used (assuming that his health has gotten better) the next time I see him.0

Old geezer as opposed to a young geezer?Did you ever see a show on the tube (I forget the name of the show and wrestler that hosted it...I must be a geezer  ) that had a segment about the cars moonshiners used to run hooch? A yellow stepdown era Hudson was one of them. The police probably had Hudson cars so they could catch Hudson cars.

I've read articles about Hudson's being used by police departments. More than one stated that they had to unhook to white triangle light on the front grill as people would see them coming at night and slow down...0
-
I've heard the same thing about the grill light.0

This car was converted to a police car. Its pretty period correct. However the door badges are repro and not period correct. Also the amber lighted mount on the drivers side rear quater panel is specific to the West Coast. The car looks like it was replicated by using an Los Angles County car from the area. Pretty cool though.
