routing dual exhaust on 57 Hornet

Has anybody out there run true dual exhaust on a 1957 Hornet?

Looking at the routing on the new project car I just bought the driver's side manifold exits in front of the suspension and the exhaust pipe routes around the front of the motor into the passenger's side manifold. the passenger's side manifold has its exit at the rear which runs down next to the transmission & into a "Y's" pipe. The drivers side they runs under the middle of the car to become that sides exhaust.

I am going to replace the entire exhaust and would like to eliminate the front crossover pipe but do not know if this has been done before.

Anybody with a 1957 Hudson done this? Is there room to route the driver's side exhaust pipe between the engine and the steering box?

It would be nice to have a later AMC rear dump driver's side exhaust manifold so if anybody has one for sale privite email me.

thanks,

I've never seen a 57 Hornet but on my 55 Ford F-100 the exhaust was the same way. I found another manifold and mounted it backwards then ran the exhaust down. If you run it back it will hit the steering box. Hard to explain in words but it works and fools everybody at the shows.
  • I can't tell you how to run your exhaust system but your situation and the reply from 464Saloon made me think of the same exhaust setup on a buddy's '55 Ford Fairlane. We took the crossover pipe off of the car one night and ran around with it and would get it wound up and back off just to listen to it pop like crazy and watch the flames shoot out through the grill. They would shoot out for what looked like about 2 feet or better. We got stopped by a state trooper who wrote him a defective equipment ticket. We cooked our hands putting the pipe back on and then had to wash the grill up good but while we were getting by with it, it was something to hear that y-block talk and see those flames shooting out the grill. I bought a '56 Fairlane Victoria after that but it had true dual exhaust manifolds and pipes on it. So I never got to shoot flames through it's grill. But it would definitely talk out the tail end of the car! I sure miss those old days and old cars!

Good luck with the duals on your Hornet.
  • well I pulled the fuel pump off to clean all the crap out of it this afternoon and noticed that the driver's side exhaust pipe did not tie into the passenger's side manifold. it runs directly underneath it and forms a "X" pipe where I thought the "Y" was at. Seams that it does have true duel exhaust after all. Guess I need to look more closely next time!

I did have one of the 292 Y block F*rd trucks with the front crossover like posted above. Made for a slick twin turbo set up with two of the 79-81 Mustang & Carpi 2.3 liter 4 banger turbochargers. Ran much better with 8lbs of boost also!

    thanks for the replys.
