Dry Run w/Car on Trailer: Part 1 the Winch

Well I finished my winch mount.
1 word... OVERKILL!
I didn't buy an expensive Warn style winch - I wanted one more portable. So I bought one at Harbor Frieght on sale for 99.00
9600lb rolling
8600 marine
3600 drag
Then I went to my favorite metal recycler and found some staineless steel to build a platform and exoskelton to
Also - your eyes do not deceive you the winch platform and "rollcage" are stainless steel not painted! I bent the pipe with my bender and got some stainless wire for my MIG welder.
The stainless wire works pretty good in the MIG - but the problem I had was any splatter would melt into the stainless.
I'm convinced now that a TIG welder is on the horizon!

- Protect the winch
- Because it looks cool and goes with the trailer
- Because I can!
- Because I got nothin' better to do!
It works pretty good and the cage makes it easier to place in the receiver. I can also use this on my 4x4! NOTE: the legs and rubber feet are only for storage of the unit. When mounted on the trailer the feet do not touch - by design!;)

My brother and I do it the old fashioned way. We just take turns hand cranking the car on our trailor. If we get too tired, I call one of my sons to help.
Good luck with you new trailer & winch. It looks great.0 -

I thought about doing things that way but Rambo's paws kept slipping off the handle (no opposable thumbs and all)

Good thing. If my dog Max had opposable thumbs he would take over the world!0

Very nice set up Dan, I could use a nice trailer like that.0

I don't know why, but I just flashed on the scene in the movie "The Gods Must be Crazy" where the guy accidentaly winches his Land Rover into a tree...0

Rambo is about 6.5 years old. If I remember lifespan on purebred labs is average of 10-16 years. I've heard of some getting on to 18 and 20 but I'm sure thats rare.
So far Rambos been in excellent health. The only time he's been to the vet is for checkups, and when I freak out about something! One night Rambo was extremely restless, lying down for no more than 30-60 seconds and in obvious pain and his tail looked like it was broken...no kidding it just drooped straight down at a 90 degree bend about an 1" out from his butt.
So I run him down to the 24x7x365 Animal Emergency place here in town and they don't know whats wrong. The attending doc then remembered and article in a journal about "cold water tail syndrome" that mostly afflicts hunting dogs and is basically like when you sprain your neck - it's just their tail! As it heals the tail starts to straighten out little by little but the end still hangs straight down!
I'm partial to black labs because we always had one when I was growing up, but the labrador breed in general is one of the best dogs around whether you want a working or companion dog and are just the best family dogs for their size IRHO (In Rambos Humble Opinion)
Of course a lot of that is temperment and training as I've seen plenty of aggressive labs in my time as well.
I don't take him on many walks (I need to get a foot surgery  and keep putting it off...) but I work him through his commands for about 10-15 minutes a couple of times a week and then I play hard fetch with him 5-6 days a week for 20-30 minutes straight. Then about 2x a month I take him to a local lake and a good swim session for 30-45 minutes except during the deep winter months.
See - you ask a question about the dog and I can't shut up!0 -
Dan,
