Clutch Woes Pt2
Well I took the advice of several on the forum and added about a third of a bottle of Hudsonite to my clutch and wow it worked great in all gears, but.............only for a day. The next day I drove the car the clutch again started grabbing going into first. So I got under the car and low and behold it looks like I am leaking Hudsonite!!!! A pan under the car this morning confirmed my fears. So the question now is there any way to seal this thing without yanking the transmission out of the car????

If the leak is coming from the gasket from the pressure plate to flywheel...
hate to say it, but to do it right, you need to pull that tranny out, or at least back far enough to get the pressure plate off the flywheel (which pretty much means out)
CLean that surface, maybe you want to have the pressure plate and flywheel gasket sealing surfaces checked for flattness. Either get a new gasket (Dale Cooper) or make one, and use a bit of ultra blue permatex to seal it properly. Don't use too much, you don't want it squeezing out into the clutch area. Make sure you follow the manual for how to reassemble the pressure plate to flywheel (meaning the order of torquing the bolts.... like a wheel) and you should be good to go.
The alternatiove is to keep topping it off here or there, but that sounds like a bother.
another thing I thought of after I wrote the above... is the throwout bearing has a seal on it that can and will wear, allowing hudsonite to leak from there. If you're going to pull the trans out, to do the gasket, do yourself a favor, replace the throwout bearing, (Doug Wildrick) if it is older, or the seal looks worn. Might as well kill two birds with one stone, since you already got the trans out... I wouldn't want to take it out twice.....especially if it is OD!
Sorry I don't have a quick fix solution for you.....
if it is any consolation, mine leaks hudsonite as well, maybe not near as bad, but, I'm counting down until the OD goes back in, meaning when we find the trans and driveshaft.... I might just put a new clutch in as well, I got a gasket, new throwout bearing, and a NOS clutch, that might get used.... I thin the pressure plate and flywheel are fine, but might have them checked, while I got it all apart....0 -
Don't overlook the possibility that one or both of the drain plugs are leaking. They should have a copper gasket or washer under them. I don't know of a suitable replacement off hand. perhaps a visit to Ace Hardware.

One of the most common reasons for leakage after a rebuild is the edge of the throwout seal being turned back on installation. It's unfortunately very easy to do if you have the bearing assembly sitting on the front of the transmission. Best method is to insert the seal into the clutch first, ensuring that the lip of the seal doesn't get snagged on the edge of the hole inthe cover. There is a possibility of course that the fluid is coming out the gasket, and you should be able to ascertain this by "eyometer", with the engine running. Take the bottom cover off, and lay a sheet of paper under the car. Run the engine and see where the oil sprays out. Good luck,

Is the throughout bearing seal separate from the bearing? I don't want to buy something that I don't need to. I did the rebuild many years ago and do not remember.0

The seal is part of the whole assembly.
