I know K-Gap sells replacement original-style molding 'retainers', which are basically stainless steel strips that have a '['-shaped cross section. Are these what you need? I know these come in the various sizes used on stepdowns. What car do you have?

These varied a bit with model year. I was able to get the large trim retainers for the rocker panels on my '51 from Bill Albright in Fontana, CA. Tel. (909) 823-9168... Used, but cleaned up fine. Kgap has the smaller retainers in one foot lengths, which can be used cut in half. Husdson used 5 1/2 inch long strips on the rockers. Walt-LA
  • K-Gap is the answer
  • THE 4L8 THRU 50 TOP ROCKERS HAD RECTANGULAR HOLES THAT AN ALMOST SQUARE 1 AND ONEHALF INCH CLIP POPPED INTO TO HOLD ON THE WIDE STAINLESS. i HAVE SOME USED ONES FOR A PATTERN, BUT NOT A FULL SET. k GAP DOES NOT HAVE THESE. i DONT KNOW OF ANY SUPPLIER THAT DOES, BUT SOMEONE PROBABLY HAS THEM, BILL ALBRIGHT

I cleaned up and saved about half of mine for the Commadore wide trim. Used them judiciously to locate the trim and alternated in between with Restoration Specialties #2356 break-to-fit clips for holding securely.

Thinking about it now, you could put a washer or square nut around the stud to locate in the square hole, and use them for the whole thing.
