What is this hole for?
On the "transmission/engine mounting plate" that is currently on sale on EBAY (I don't need one), there are two holes--one for the starter, but what is the purpose of the one on the left in the photo? I have a 54 308 hydra, and that hole has no cover of any sort on my car? Is that the way it should be? Basically I think that there must have been a bolt on plate/cover for the second hole which exposes the flywheel. My car just has an open hole--and this doesn't seem right to me.
Here is the url. I still haven't figured out how to post photos here--but I have given it a test try here. AH,-- the photo shows up!!!

JP That hole is the timing hole. When you need to do timing you use the long marks on the flywheel in conjunction with the "pointer" on the mounting plate to assist with timing. It is also the spot where if you have a manual transmission, you add Hudsonite clutch compound after removing a flywheel screw to first, drain, then, refill with clutch fluid. It acts as the access spot for doing this job as well.0

It's also a good place to drop that plug into while trying to get it screwed back into the flywheel. A magnet or piece of masking tape on a 3/8 drive socket with a hand-held medium extenson holds the plug tighter and gives you a better chance to get the threads started.0

I used to just stuff a rag down there.

When I got my 49, The prior owner proudly handed me an original Snap On Magnetic Hudson Clutch Fluid Plug socket. It is real neat. It is the exact depth of the plug head....the thing is GREAT~~~
I have never seen another one0
