electronic ignition advice

Hello Hudsonites;

I'm considering a Pertronix Ignitor II for my Hudson 308 stepdown. Has anyone else tried this out? I like the adaptive dewll feature. Am curious to know how the thing knows how to time itself.

How configurable is the system? Can I program it to do things like waste spark or multi spark? Do I need to disable the vacuum advance when I install it?

Hoping that misfires and cold start problems will be a thing of the past.

Thanks;

-Chris

  • I have been running a Pertronix (P/N 1362) in my stepdown for Two years. your system will need to be converted to 12Volt neg. ground however. I don't know about the Pertronix II!??. I have been running the ignitor upgrade along with the Pertronix coil and stock vacuum advance and it starts quick, runs smoooooth in all driving conditions.
  • Very sweet. I did the 12v conversion, forgot to mention that. Got tired of dim headlights, and am looking forward to a stereo. :-)

    Looking forward to the Ignitor. HOw much does that puppy cost anyway? How can I find the part number for the Ignitor II?

  • I am running the Ignitor 1362P6 on my stock 6V Pos ground Hornet. Runs really nice. The P6 designation is for the 6V Pos ground. I got the matching coil and new wires while I was at it. You can pickup the unit for 100-150 bucks.

    I have a 12 volt negative ground Crane Cams Fireball XR700/XR3000 that is still in original box. I purchased it for 125.00 from Sonny Jones at HET National in Nashville and was going to install in our 51 Hornet. I sold the car and still have unit. I doubt I will ever convert to 12 volt on any of my cars. If anyone is interested, I will sell to HET Member for 100.00.

    I paid $121.00 for the unit and it is a direct bolt in, the old point pivot becomes the locating pin for the ignitor and a flat head screw secures the assembly in the old point lockdown hole. Note: the installation instructions will say "Application Chrysler" don't worry the 1362 part# is correct.

    I just did the Pertronix conversion and am pretty up on it as it is fresh in my mind. First they only make the Ignitior, the II is not available. Second do not use the Flamethrower II coil, it is specifically designed for the ignitor II which has 0.6 ohms resistance. The ignitior runs on 1.5 ohms. I found out the hard way as I purchased the ignitor and Flamethrower II coil from a local speed shop and neither the guy there or I knew the difference so I opted for the higher voltgae coil. Well it ran about a minute and smoked the module. I called Pertronix and they informed me that you can't run the ignitor with the Flamethrower II coil. They told me to take both back to the speed shop and they would replace them free with the Flamethrower coil. The speed shop did and within about two hours I was running again and haven't had a lick of problems since. I also have the Pertronix on my 55 Ford F-100 and my 68 Olds 442 and they work great. 51 HornetA is right there is a 6v and 12v part number. I am on 12 now so I got that system. The ignitor kit was around 90.00 and the coil was 40 or so. About the same as Jegs or Summit and I had the convenience of dealing with a local shop, especially since we had a problem. Go for it, it is a great system and I am pleased with their custome service.
