Help please 1926 Hudson What is it?
Hello all
I am in the process of buying an Essex. The details I have so far is that it is 1926 Essex. (Maybe sedan) 2.6 straight six. Imported from New Zealand 3 years ago! Can anyone shed any light on exactly what model it is please? I dont have access to the vin and plate no's yet so this is just based on the photos.
Any help would be much appreciated. There seem to be so many variants on body styles. I can tell you that there are wire spoke wheels and some kind of metal bumpers for it too!!
Many thanks

If you can get anyone to look at the builder's plate, it's just inside the engine compartment on the firewall. Very prominent. And it has the serial number stamped into it. With that number, we can tell you the year and the series. In those years Hudson made a first series (half the year) and second series (the other half of the year). I just looked at an Essex to determine the year, and it turns out it was a 'first series 1926' which looked just like a 'second series 1925'. So, just looking at the car would be inferior to actually having the number.0

Wow for a car that's been sitting in the weeds it looks to be in nice shape!
Great Find! What are your plans restoration or ...?0 -
Hi there
Originally when we heard about it we thought maybe "hotrod" Ouch!!! I hear you cry. But when we saw it it is obvious it is in such good condition that it has to be restored. The biggest problem is storage but we are trying to sort that one out as I type.
She just has to be put back to her former glory. From what I understand because all import duty is paid and papers present the DVLA have told me that all I have to do is get it MOT'd and pay £38 for registering it, the necessary paperwork and away we go. So there you have it, we would plan to have it MOT'd and on the road by Easter and then the rest of the cosmetics will follow. All glass, bumpers, handles and bits and bobs are in the car ready to be refitted, upholstery, roof, tyres and steering wheel will probably be the biggest issues immediately but again I have a plan in force! Watch this space.
Just really wanted to know if it was a Sedan, coach or what really, so many options, havnt been able to get right over to see the plate and wont have the paper work for another few weeks until im ready to go and collect it.
So what do you think? Would you like to see it on the road? Anyone got any good suggestions with regards to places to get spares? I have a few contacts from the motor trade but I guess some of this will have to come in from overseas?
All the best

Well done to choose restoration - an excellent choice! Looks like a Sedan as it has four doors but the year and series as has been stated need to be defined. The best thing for parts etc is to join your local HET club. You mention pounds so are you based in England? If so we can put you on to a contact if you do not have one already. Our NZHET club has members in the UK. Good luck with the project and keep us posted with progress.

Julie, I'll put in a pitch for joining our worldwide Hudson-Essex-Terraplane (for information, go to the website at http://www.hudsonclub.org/ ). There is a network of Essex owners within the Club and it's a great way to "network" for parts and advice. However, I don't mean to compete with the fine NZHET Club, especially since your Essex is an 'ex-Kiwi'. Whatever club you prefer, I heartily suggest that you join it, to make life easier as you set forth on your restoration.0

Jon's post made me think...did you get the NZ registration book with the car? We've heard they keep a nice history on the cars down there in regards to prior owners and such...just wondering because I wish we had that here on our old cars0 -
I am a little confused here in the USA. Where are you ? And where is the car right now ? If it was me and I have the car in my name and paid for it would be in my nice dry garage right now and out of them weeds. It looks like a real nice restorable Hudson Motor Car and I wish I had spoke, wire wheels on my Hudson. Take care, Ron0

If you are able to get me the "Registration Plate" (number plate details) from New Zealand or even the sticker number on the windscreen, then I can probably find out the year of first registration here in New Zealand.
Email me at HETdavid@websters.co.nz (Drop the HET)0 -
Thank you to everyone for their feedback.
Just to clarify. We are in the United Kingdom and the car is currently in a field about 1 hours drive away from where we live! We are in the process of buying it with a view to restoring it. My partner is going down there this week with a view to getting the number details off of the vehicle. We dont have the paper work yet or know if there will be a handbook with it.
We have both fallen in love with this little green and black car she is so lovely and we really want to get her back on the road. Once we have her she will be taken out of the field and dry stored and then we will be stripping her and rebuilding her from the ground up! A fantastic little project.
As soon as I have any nuber details I will post them here. I have been doing some investigation work of my own and found a couple of really amazing websites with a whole host of information. And as for this site what a wonderfull group of dedicated individuals.
Thank you to you all.

It's a second series 1926 Four door sedan. Definite. and they sure are healthy looking blackberry vines. How did you manage to get it out of N.Z.? The Ministry of Culture and Heritage are clamping donw on this sort of thing.

Assuming the steering wheel is on the right side (as viewed from the front seat), your car was probably assembled at the Hudson plant near London. British-bound cars were shipped from Detroit 'knocked down' into their component parts and were assembled at the factory in England. Hudsons (and of course this includes Essexes) were also assembled in Canada, Australia and Sweden. I believe the American engine was modified slightly for English use, to meet the tax codes in your country.
Here's an Essex E-Group you might want to join: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/EssexSuper6/0 -
The car was imported from New Zealand 3 years ago! (Not from the UK)
I am also waiting for the essexsuper6 yahoo group to confirm my subscription to that group.
Many thanks0 -
Hi Geoff
It was imported 3 years ago from NZ to the UK along with one other soft top sportster hudson which is now back on the road.0 -
The New Zealand cars would be essentialy the same as the U.K. assembled ones. They were imported in crates, and assembled in either Dominion Motors in Wellington, or at various dealers around the country. There was no difference between U.S. models except for the r.h.d. components. If you can supply the registration plate number we may be able to supply the details, but don't hold your breath. Once registration has been expired for over two years they now cancel it, and I don't know if they hold further details in the central computer.

This possibly came with the ownership papers, as we have in NZ and that would give you most of the information you need, unless it was deregistered
Lots of gooood stuff down under.0 -
Is it a 4 cyl or a 6 cyl?0
-
it is a 6 cyl0
-
It is a 6cyl and is on ebay as due to teenager, toddler and twins on the way we can no longer keep her.
ebay.co.uk item number 2005037259990 -
I'd suggest that this was originally an Australian car given the "Motors Limited" Adelaide plaque & noting that very few if any, wire wheeled Essex were imported into NZ. The piano hinge doors suggest that it is a USA body not an Aussie bodied car.
Good luck with the sale.0
