OK here goes. I have a 1929 Hudson standard sedan that I have owned for about 18 years and only know about this year of Hudson witch is very little but enough to get buy. I have never realy liked the newer Hudsons but now some of them I seem to have grown more fond of ? I guess like some look better then others like I am sure you guys do not like the pre 30s cars but love the step downs. Now it semms like most of the posts on here are all the problems that are what Hudson did wrong as far as "RUST" big one for Hudson as far as I can tell and maybe some complecated transmissions clutches etc. I am thinking I would like a nice Hudson pickup street rod type that looks nice. Please chime in and let me know all the good Hudson stories. (NO RUST PLEASE) LOL. My 2 cents worth of nothing..LOL, Ron

  • Ron, with all of the stepdowns you mention the clutches. If you got th 29, I have to imagine that it has a much similar clutch setup as the stepowns. If your able to have trouble free use with the 29, I got to beleive you would be fine with a stepdown. Unfortunatley, rust is the worst porblem that stepdowns can suffer from.

    Ron,

A Hudson "P"cup is a neat vehicle to have.. both utilitarian and a HUDSON to boot. If you are considering a modified truck..Here is my experience. Many years a go( early 70's?) my Dad bought a 46-47 with a Hornet engine in it. The old splasher was in the bed but was missing all the little parts, like linkage, carb etc. The Hornet engine was clapped out. really Tiiiired. Since the splasher wasn't an option to put back in and he wanted to use the truck as a truck.. I installed a 289 Ford engine along with the FMX automatic transmission out of a wrecked 67 Fairlane. I was amazed at how easy it was . The stock driveshaft was used as well as the original U-joint to connect to the FMX tailshaft. A simple angle iron crossmember was bolted across the X member to support the FMX. The fuel line had to be rerouted to the drivers side. The throttle cable assembly from the Ford Fairlane donar car fit perfectly. The stock Hudson single lever shift linkage lined up with the FMX shift lever, only had to use a few nuts and washers to adapt it. I had a pressure cap neck soldered onto the radiator and had the lower outlet repositioned just to neaten up the conversion. I don't recall what I did for the exhaust, but I am sure the single Ford Y pipe was used with minor adaptation. Fabricating two motor mounts was the hardest part and even that was easy.Plate steel was welded up to fit the ford engine mounts and then welded to the frame. In hind sight, I should have bolted them to the frame, but "future restoration" wasn't on our minds at the time .Turned out to be a very reliable around town truck. Steered very easy compared to the old heavy 308 up there. The rear gears weren't too bad, perhaps they had been changed in the past. The front springs had been changed to support the 308 and had to have major adjustment since the Ford weighed MUCH less. It sat up on the snubbers. It was painted kind of "tan" color, wonder where it is now..

You asked for Hudson stories, so there!
