Gas Guage Problem
I am trying to get my gas gauge to work. I had a new sending unit put in and the mechanic said it was working when he finished but by the time I looked at it the first time it wasn't. Is there a simple way of checking what my problem is with out pulling out the unit?? When my mechanic rechecked it he said there was power going to the unit. I don't understand the positive ground system and was wondering if somehow the wires can be reversed on the tank - ??? And if anyone knows of a Hudson expert in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area that could fix this I would appreciate it.

The problem is probably a bad ground on the tank caused by paint, rust or dirt. Try running a wire from bare metal on tank to bare metal on the frame. If that doesn't fix it, try grounding the sender lead. The gas gauge should read full. This would eliminate gauge as the problem.0

Positive ground doesn't make any difference, everything works exactly the same no matter which way the battery is connected, unless you have an ammeter fitted, in which case if the battery is reversed, the meter will read backwards.

Thanks for the reply - that sounds like an easy wasy to check - my tank was removed and cleaned up and sealed and perhaps the sealer is keeping it from gounding - if I can get my fat torso under the car I'll check it out. A voltage meter should tell me shouldn't it? Jack0

When I had my tank cleaned and sealed, I found out that the tank was actually grounded through the metal gas line running from the tank forward. I had cut the line, with the thoughts of putting in an electric pump. Since I didn't have a pump at the time I put a piece of rubber hose in the line and then my gauge did not work. If you think about it, The tank is held by the metal straps but they are insulated from the tank by the felt strips between the tank and the straps, so unless the straps make contact with the tank where they turn up to attach to the floor. the only ground it can have is the fuel line. I ran a ground from one of the screws that hold the sending unit in, and now the gauge works fine.
