Stripping a Pacemaker - what should I save?
The subject says it all - I am stipping a '51 4 door Pacemaker that has too much rust to save. It is the same model as my driver. I have no idea of parts availability - should I strip out the guts of the doors? What about drums, pitted chrome parts, dash parts etc? The steering wheel is shot, the gas tank missing. It has from what I was told a rebuilt 232 engine - it still looks super clean - the head gasket looks fresh and all the ports are sealed off with duct tape. I was told it was in the process of being restored when the owner died. The family pushed it out of the barn in Indiana into the yard where it sat for several years - they sold it to the guy I got it from in North Carolina - he kept it outside for several years. The engine will still turn over by hand so I am planning on saving it with the tranny although the engine I have is a 262. The tranny does not have overdrive but my car does. When I am done stripping out what I want I will be willing to give away the rusted body - if you are interested let me know! And in advance, thanks!!!

Given the finite supply of Hudson parts, I'd save anything that can be salvaged.0

The part you throw away, will be the part you need later on, speaking from experience.Save as much as you can, even if only for samples etc.0

Thanks for the reply Dave - being able to salvage is one thing, having a place to put it is another - front end parts, rear end parts, door guts - they add up too fast. I used to be into vintage VWs and I saved everything I could and usually had something no one needed or wanted. I appreciate your reply and I'll not put down the tools until I run out of space!0 -
Thanks for the reply - basically you said the same thing Dave said - I guess two out of three is a majority - I'll save what I can - I just hope I remember what it was when I find it in the garage later on! After saving VW parts for years seeing a radiator in my garage is taking some getting used to! Take care - Jack0

Jack,
I understand what you're saying about the VW parts. However, Hudson parts are much more rare. Maybe you can store parts with someone you know.

i'd even keep the air in the tires if it were me. but then again, i have a couple barns that are filling up quite rapidily. and what the heck, i still got a wife too . . . . really however, i bought a box ot manilla tags with wires and have been tagging stuff with year / model. makes it easier for the widow when she has the auction

Looks as though you and KKTREB should get togther. He has starved his engine of oil and would be a good candidate for a bargain 232. At the time of this post he's on page 2. You both have a need. Let us know how it works out both of you.
Thanks for letting me share,

I want the differential carrier assembly. Let me know how we can get together. I will be at Pigeon Forge and plan to come down through the Virginia DC area the following week.

SAVE EVERYTHING They're not making it anymore. I don't know if you've been to a hardware store lately but even nuts and bolts are getting rediculous in price and automotive fine thread stuff is getting harder to come by. Take it to a swap meet if you can't keep it.0

What is a differential carrier assembly??? All the replies I have gotten are super - looks like I need to move stuff around in my garage.0

Thanks Kim - so far I haven't located him but I haven't given up yet!! The rebuilt engine was the main reason I bought the car so we'll see what happens - Jack0

when you are done stripping the car out, I would love to come down and have a look at what's left!0

No problem - it may not be very pretty! Some where in this thread are my phone numbers - save them and give me a call in a week or so. Jack0
