Need Front End Rebuild Kit
I need a Front End Rebuild Kit for a 1950 Pacemaker Deluxe, 232 ci.
Not that Kanter's price of $705 is too high, however, I would prefer at least one other alternative. Current Kanter catalog, page 10
The springs check OK and are in line to be media blasted and powder coated (same place is doing the wheels). Sway bar is also in good shape. It, too, will be blasted and powder coated. Just all the rubber is gone and the stablizer links are worn due to lack of rubber.
I am making my parts list based on a standard Front End Rebuild list. So I figure Tie Rods ends better be included even though mine look OK.

K-Gap has most or all of the rubber you need. Sway bar links can be found at a good auto parts store by matching what you have. Tie-rod ends should be available locally but you'll have to scrounge the king pins and bushings and the dreaded center pivot (which is usually a must-do). I think you can beat $700 by buying each part as you find them, preferably from a member or one of our fine vendors.0

I know of K-Gap. And until I know the exact names of each piece of rubber, I do not know what to order. However, I would prefer to purchase a "complete" kit.
As I do not have my books yet, what is the center pivot and where is it located? You will need to forgive my ignorance. I have a huge learning curve to make up while saving a piece of history. Before I bought/saved this car, all I knew was the basic vehicle parts. I know what springs, shocks and sway bars are.
Thanks, Ed0 -

The center pivot or center point steering is the pivot in the front center of car that the steering linkage connects to. For infomation on repairing this try getting a copy of the March/April 2006 issue of WTN. For some suspension parts try Rare Parts at:
http://ecomserv.bytedesigns.com/rp/
For tie rod ends try '48-'54 Ford 1/2-3/4 ton truck tie rod ends.0 -

Thank you for the parts lesson, parts source and alternative parts.

Sometimes advice as to where to find parts isn't as valuable as to where NOT to find parts. I hope I don't step on any toes, but.... I would steer very clear of Kanter. Prices are very high compared to most other sources and the customer service..well it seems to not be in thier vocabulary. Try to do business with folks that own and love Hudsons.
Been there, done that, Dave W.0 -

Speaking of folks that own and love Hudsons, all you have to do is call Dale Cooper and tell him you need the complete kit for your year and model car, and he'll do the rest. You can browse his catalog too, and see what he's got.
As stated earlier, he doesn't carry the king pin kits, but I see those on ebay all the time. I don't think he carries the center bushing either, but you can get one up cheap at McMaster-Carr.

http://www.mcmaster.com/nav/enter.asp?partnum=7965K31&pagenum=1008 (This is the bushing I used on the center, I recall it has to be trimmed down a bit...from 2" to 1-3/4" I think)0 -

As I am new, Kanter came up in the top ten Google search, so I started there.0 -

Thank you the direction and parts links. They are now book marked.
Told the wife the Kanter cost. She was not phased by the price to get the car road safe.
However, I will make a call to Mr. Cooper.0 -

Just got these installed. They only had red in stock. Now when I wiggle a front wheel, there is not a lot of slop. I will still get the steering bushing and once I get my manuals, I'll order all the other rubber from K-Gap.
Thanks for the parts tip. I have to get my own grease gun now. Cool, I get to buy new tools!!

I agree with dave.
I have a packard and if you need packard parts their the guys...
but they dont have, drive, or love hudys. I called them once to get parts for the packard and the hudson, and the guy told me "why are ya messin around with the hudson when you have a packard". I havent bought from them again. rareparts.com is good. brake cylinders can be bought from checker as 50 ford.
same with the tie rod ends. most components for the 50 cars will work on each other.0 -
If you don't have a copy of the March/April issue of WTN, send me your snail mail address and I'll send you one. HETfortyqtpi@earthlink.net (drop the HET). As indicated, it has an excellent illustrated article by Norm Blackmer on rebuilding your centerpoint steering. Includes parts sources. Also check out Ken Cate's website at http://members.aol.com/stepdown53/STEPDOWNPG.html :cool:0
