Point retaining bracket interferes with Pertronix install

edited November -1 in HUDSON
I'm installing a Pertronics ignitor. The device replaces the points in the dist. One problem, the Pertronix unit wants to lay over the place where the points mounting bracket is.

Instructions say to remove the bracket, but it doesn't look easy to do. No obvious mounting screws.

I know others here have done this upgrade. Should I just cut the bracket off with tin snips? (no). I'd like to be able to role back to points if need be.

Thanks;

-Chris

  • In the pic, the piece sticking up at about the 5:30 position is used to hold the points. It is in the way of the Ignitor.

    The bracket needs to be removed, there are small rivets to drill out or file off.

    Unfortunately this means that you can't readily reinstall the old points on the side of the road should the need arise.

    I'm not expecting my Pertronix ignition to fail, but I do carry a complete spare ready to pop in points distibutor in the trunk.

    Along with the waterpump, fan belt, radiator hoses, wire, tape, oil, water, trolley jack, jump start battery, battery charger, tool kit and tow chain.

    I don't remember what the inside of my 49 distributor looked like, So I don't know which one your picture is of.If it is the IAT4213 as used in 48-50... I found that I couldn't use the Pertronix kit. I had to use a later distributor on my 49 Super Six with 12 volts. The design changed and the early one just won't work. I removed my rivets only to find that It wasn't gonna fit. I used pop rivets to carefully reassemble it and keep it for a spare, like Bob said.

    The vacuum advance and rotor are different as well as the breaker plate. Perhaps you have a later distributor on your 308? I hope so. Like I said, I can't tell by looking at your picture which you have. Good Luck, Dave
  • So I drilled out the rivits and mounted the Pertronix. Am wondering if I have the older dist design. I found that I had to file down part of the Pertronix to get the dist to fit back in, else the vacuum advance jams.

    Here's the dist with all the parts still mounted.

    Dave;

    Perhaps you can tell if this is a newer or older one. Did you have trouble getting the Pertronix to fit in the housing?

    Thanks again;

  • ... will look to see if I'm a IAT4213

    Pic with dist out of car and Pertronix mounted. Lower right part of Pertronix is too large to fit back inside when dist is replaced.

    The only number stamped on this part of the assembly is "8.5".

    I can get it all back together now, I think, but I'm wondering if the Pertronix will really work.

    I probably have the wrong unit.

    Chris, I had no trouble mounting the Pertronix in the later dist. it just dropped in. If I remember correctly, the early distributor uses a large rotor or "bug'. The later one uses a small roter.. maybe someone on the forum will know. I will be down at the shop tonight and will check mine if someone doesn't pop up with the answer..

    Any idea where I can get a later dist?.. that way I can be sure it'll work.

    Can I replace the "internal part" of the dist, shown here...

    ... or do I need the entire housing, shaft, etc?...

  • More Pertronix info.

    Hud 1937 - 47 Dist is Autolite - IGW Series Pertronix part # 1568

    Hud 1950 - 55 Dist is Autolite - IAT Series Pertronix part # 1362

    I'll bet my 1948 Hud still has it's 1948 dist in it. :-) OOPS

    (I have a 1954 308, and assumed a '54 dist)

    So yeah, I guess my short term plan should be to repair the breaker place I just "broke" to fit the Pertronix.

    Then buy the proper 1954ish dist. Anybody sellimg em?

    I hope you didn't loose the small insulating washers. I put mine back together with a couple small aluminum pop rivets designed for rain gutter repair. It's now my spare distributor. Perhaps someone on the forum has a spare they will sell you. A forum buddy helped me out. I swapped a Mallory for my late distributor.I am going to deliver it next weekend at P.F. When you do get one... check out the advance mechanism under that breaker plate. The one I got had great shaft bushings, but the advance weights were almost ready to come loose.They never get any lubrication .I used some braze and a file to get it back to useable. I have no clue as to how well the advance is working but it runs great. I think I'll leave it alone.

    Maybe someone will step up to the plate with a spare dist for you..
