Dave A interesting point to keep in mind.I agree that the H-10 Champion is a fine replacement, but if you are going to show the car for points in ,for example, AACA judging, all Champions are Cadmium (silver)coated and this style did not show on cars until 1956.You can do some things,if it matters.1. you can take the cad plated plugs and dip them in gun bluing compound. It will turn them nearly black oxide, like original,or buy AC 45L that are already black and are the equivelent to H-11 or the colder H-10.Ron
  • Thanks Bill and Ron. I have Auto-lite 216's in my 308 now but haven't had much experience with them. I have spare sets of new H10C's and H12's. As far as I know, the only difference between them is that the H12 is hotter. The suggestion to use bluing appeals to me since I like to keep my cars as original as possible.

Occasional Rough Idle With New Autolite Plugs Was A Problem For Me On The 308 But Switching To H 10 C Champion Several Years Ago Cured It , Check Walmarts Lawnmower Section
  • So far, it looks like I should give the Champion H10C's a try.

I put about 5,000 miles a year on my 54 Hornet and I have had good results with the Champion H-10c.

I ran only H-11's. It's been awihle since I've even been to a local meet, let alone a national but I got a bunch at Detroit. Someone commisioned Champion to make a gross and sold some of 'em to the rest of us. I do believe I may have six new ones left somewhere.

Seems to me, an enterprising soul could approach Champion. Would be nice if the club (maybe the store?) did. If not H-10's used to work...

For the purists, having the original H-11's would be great. :D However, Federal-Mogul (owns Champion) is in Chapter 11 and the the plugs are made in Mexico. These factors may make this challenging. :(
  • Another H-10C user here. Run fine never a problem with them.
  • So, which ones are "Best of the Best" for 50 Pacemaker 232 ci?

"best of the best" are.....Don't shoot me.....NGK plugs. They take the biggest beating and show the least amount of wear. I used to be on a sprint car pit crew and we experimented with all different types of plugs. We could run a heat and the NGK plugs looked like new after the heat was over. I have yet to run them in my coupe because I don't need to change them yet. The best all around plug in MY opinion is the NGK.

I am OK with that. Which NGK is equiv to the Champion J7-14s that are in my Pacemaker now? They are worn.

I honestly can't answer that one. I would go to the parts house and cross reference the ones that you have. If you are worried about originality, paint the tops a flat black so nobody can tell!

The cross for a Champion J7 is the NGK B6S. The cross for a Champion H10C is the NGK B4L or B6L.

Thank you. That data is not at Champion, NAPA or Autozone on-line. Google of the Champion J7 find nothing of significance.
  • The new Champion equivalent for the J-7 is RJ8C, stock #871.

Thank you. It is now added to the Parts Swap pdf file that I downloaded from some nice Hudson site.

Well, the first source I looked had no listing for H11 or H12. I checked other sources found the following:

    Champion H10C to NGK B6L

    Champion H11 to NGK B4L

    Champion H12 to NGK B4L
  • What is the best plug for the 48-49 254cid with an iron head that called for a J9 plug .The talk has been about the 308 cid plugs but the J9 is gone and I found a site that said J7 replaces it. Can anyone shed more light on this? Thanks
