How much oil pressure is enough?

31 Hudson 8. The guage reads up to "5." I'm not sure 5 what, but I'm only getting 2:eek: I put my test guage on the oil line and it doesn't show anything, but that guage starts at 10PSI. With the engine running and the oil line unhooked, it sort of spurts out of the fitting.



So how much oil pressure should I have?:rolleyes:

    I think what you are showing is fine for a splasher engine. Since its not a pressure engine you should be fine if oil is spurting from the fitting. And yes that oil guage is not fine enough to read a splasher.

    So long as the oil gauge is showing something, you are okay. the actual reading is not indicative of the amount of oil being pumped, and as you have noted, it comes out in spurts, as the pump oscillates.

    Thanks for the replies. The needle on the oil guage wiggles around 2, it doesn't do much. The oil guage line connects to a fitting on the right rear of the block. This fitting appears to be a pressure relief valve or something like that. What is the purpose of it? Does it oil the rear main bearing?

    3 psi. is normal pressure. Remember the pump is only to pump oil from lower pan to upper pan and troughs.

    This is actually a one-way valve with a spring loaded plunger that has to lift up to deliver the oil. It is purely and simply a way of generating a bit of back pressure in the line, so that you get a reading on the gauge. If you want to get a higher reading, you simply increase the tension of the spring, but I wouldn't bother, as I said, the amount of oil delivered is not related to the pressure showing, so long as it is reading something! the main bearings are oiled internally, from guttering in the sides of the block, where the oil is flung up and dribbles down under gravity. Pretty sophisticated eh???

    I guess I'm OK. I put plates on the car recently and have enjoyed driving it around, but I didn't know what the deal was with the oil pressure. The engine runs better each drive. One of the exhaust valves is sticking on and off. The blue smoke is greatly reduced since the first drive. It looks to me that the heads have never been off.

    I hooked my low pressure fuel pressure guage to the oil line and it surged between 1.5 and 2.5 so I guess that is OK. Also left quite a puddle of oil on the shop floor so it seems to be flowing well.



    Who has a spare 31 Hudson 8 oil pressure guage I can purchase?
