Personally, I think it is pobably a 30-40 dollar wheel at best, with a crack. If it were perfect, then perhaps the $100-$150, but that big old crack right at the top, does that one in.

I have purchased nice uncracked wheels at several hudson meets, ie... the nationals, (one for $10) and at Doc's meet, (for $40) and this seems to be routine.

My advice would be to try e-bay.

It's fixable, but it seems to me if you go to a local meet with parts, there are several to choose from. Now if it were a 48-49 wheel, that's a different story...

Not to hijack the thread, but I would like to have a good green steering wheel for my 49.I have a non original green interior. I have a cream colored three spoke 50 PM wheel now that smells like old cheese! Dave W.
  • there is a green one also, just about the same as the maroon one.
  • do a search for steering wheel, on the second page there is some pictures of the steering wheels mrs. mahon has.

49 wheels are hard to find, the ones that have that rectangular shaped horn center. (2 spoke)

If your cream colored pacemaker wheel is not cracked and in good shape, hold on to it, they seem to be harder to find as well.

Probably the best wheels were the 52 commoore 8's which some seem to have the dark/light blue metalllic looking swirl. Way too cool.
  • that old cheese is the worst smell ever my 50 4 door pacemaker wheel smells like that but its in pieces
  • Excuse my ignorance, but why are some people smelling their steering wheels? It is a Hudson thing, fetish or something of that sort or is the smell that overwhelming? I thought only Hudsons made in Kenosha, Wisconsin smelled like cheese. :D
  • I have never smelled my hudson steering wheel, but let's just say, I know what they are talking about.

I just took a big wiff of my steering wheel. It doesn't smell like any "cheese" I've ever encountered. As a matter of fact, it has no smell at all. Mom was right, those regular showers do serve a purpose. :D Now it's your turn. Go out, sniff that wheel and report back with your findings. LOL
  • iam not smelling it like it is a rose but when i was in it takeing things out of car like the front seat couldnt help smelling something like dead feet

I didn't think you were smelling it like a rose. Sorry, but I've never smelled dead feet. Isn't there some way to clean the wheel and get rid of the smell?

It's a smell that some plastics have. My father had a 41 packard 110 with lots of plstic on the dsahboard that would make you puke if the windows were up on a hot day. Also some plastic handled screw drivers smell that way. You don't have to put your nose on the steering wheel to smell it! It permeates the whole darned car! I tried removing the wheel and using steel wool on the wheel and spraying a clear laquer from a rattle can. That worked for about a month and now it's back. I am considering trying to coat it with a clear epoxy resin. Other than two small knicks from a knob that was clamped on it, it is a mint steering wheel. Darned shame is stinks so much. Maybe I can work a deal with another forum user and get a later model green colored wheel that will work. I think the earlier wheels have a smaller rim cross section and are harder to grip than the later larger ones. Every little bit helps with arthritus and no power steering.

See everyone at Pigeon Forge..Dave w

    FYI,

On the subject of 48/49 Commodore and super "6" steering wheel, Larry Kennedy is reproducing them on original cores. They are beautiful and for someone looking for high quality wouldn't mind the price tag of $750.00. It makes the difference between above average interior to top end. You could easily piddle away that much trying to find a restorable wheel or paying someone to restore one.

    Thanks for letting me share,

  • mine smells like blood and fuel from my accident
  • i found it out trying to suss out the reason my horn doesnt work. it just takes a little whiff to notice that pong. oh boy. smells like someone threw up at the wheel

My Hudson smells like cat piss right now. Somehow a neighbors cat got caught in my garage overnight and the window was down on it. I guess he thought the floorboard was a litter box and left me a present. I like cats and have one but it does not go out of the house. I have a really shiny steel trap hanging on the garage wall that I use for skunks. Anyone know what else I could catch in it?

  • Hey Swasp. I've caught alot of 'possum's in my Hudson parts cars the last few years, I've got a 'live trap' that I use on a regular basis. Caught several stray puddy-tat's too, they all get the same treatment after they trespass on/in my Hudson's ! ! I've got one of those old steering wheels too, smells like fresh dogs%#t from 10 feet away. Must be something in that old plastic that breaks down with age that causes the foul odor. I've got some old Pacemaker steering wheels, but so far haven't noticed the rotten smell on them, only on the Commodore & Hornet steering wheels that seem to be over-bearing with odor.

  • So the concensus seems to be that Hudson steering wheels were made from old cheese, dead feet, blood and fuel. Wow, talk about recycling and cost cutting.
  • mine is a pacemaker and it stinks. its the horn cap that does it on mine. the wheel itself has been refinished by pearlcraft and its fine
  • Eat a few chili dogs, then go for a drive and you won't notice the wheel smell!

Ever get a good whiff after taking a cast off your arm or foot after a week or so? That's dead skin baby!

Same thing that happens when you hear the screeching sound of your belly rubbing on wheel turning a corner. That rubbing causes dead skin build-up in the poors of the plastic. Combine that with god knows what from 50+ years of grubby hands coming across it and its a lethal cocktail!

Now we all know the real reason for the smell - "Fat-Boy Belly Rubs and Dirty Mitts"
    :D

Great! Now I'm going to have nightmares about shirtless fat men driving around in Hudsons while grasping the steering wheel with dirty mits. :D Now we can add dead skin to the old cheese, dead feet, blood and fuel cocktail.

P.S...Never had a cast and hopefully never will.

So does anyone know where I can get a copy of, "Two Fat Guys in a Hudson Hornet," by Randall Hyton? I dying to hear it?
