Fuel Gauge Fluctuating
I finally got around to addressing the fuel gauge on my 41. With the help of some older posts, I was able to trace the problem to the sending unit. I purchased a Ford unit from Dennis Carpenter. After some cutting and bending of the rod, I installed it.
When the car is sitting still, the gauge reading is steady and accurate, when I am driving, the gauge wanders up and down and will continue to do this until the car is at rest. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a floating ground t'me. Run a wire from a mounting screw on the sender to the frame.0

Might also be a loose connection or break in the wire from sender to gauge, if it's original wire. If the latter, try running a temporary wire from the gauge (the post that's not from the ignition) to the sender, then try driving the car. If that fixes it, you've got a problem in the sender-to-gauge wire.0

This will happen when the FLOAT IS TO LIGHT.
check and be sure it is the same Weight as the Orig. Put the float in a container of water and when the Float is about Half in the water thats when it is more Stable. ( thats with the float on the arm ) When it floats on top of the liquid it will be very unstable .
If the arm is to short it will bounce more. Make sure that the angle is the same as Hudson.
Hope this helps. Rudy. (i had a carpenter unit also)0 -
Thanks for the suggestions. I will run a new wire to the sender, also I did notice that the float that came with the new sending unit was not brass like the original; it was plastic. That may be the problem. Thanks everyone!!!!0
