Ring gears

Having chipped the ring gear on two flywheels, I was wondering if there is source for new ring gears for Hudson flywheels. In the alternative, has anyone ever had the ring gears reversed on their flywheel?

    I removed my ring gear on my 41 super six and reveresed it with no problem. I haven't tried it yet and it's probably a good thing I haven't because a very knowledgeable HET member reminded me that theres no champher if you reverse it. It looks like it might take some time but I plan on grinding it before installing. Hope this can be of some help.

    Campher? Excuse my ignorance, but I have no idea what you're talking about. What will you have to grind before you install the flywheel?

    The word hud41 was looking for is chamfer. To cut off the edge or corner of the ring gear teeth so that the starter gear will mesh with the ring gear when the ring gear teeth and the starter gear teeth do not line up.

    It is possible to get ring gears built up and re-ground. I have done it myself, without removing from the car. You need an arc welder on low current, a steady hand, and a small disc grinder. The teeth are always knocked around on three equidistant sections of the periphery. However, perhaps you should be asking why the teeth are being broken off.

    Geoff has a very good question. perhaps your starter mount bolts have been replaced with the improper diameter bolts or are not centered properly. If it's a standard shift, the starter armature could be bent.

    If you decide to use the welding method to repair your teeth.. Make sure you connect the ground electrode to the flywheel..NOT ANY WHERE ELSE.. Unless you want to destroy the bearings in the engine..Don't ask how I know this..LOL.

    Ah come Dave, give us a good laugh. Tell us what happened and how you reacted to connecting the ground electrode to the wrong part of the car. Personally, I don't know the first thing about welding and wouldn't even try. The idea about the starter arm being built is a real possibility. I'm a neophyte at a lot of this, but to get the ball rolling, the first time I changed the flywheel, I put everything back in and then noticed that the throw out bearing was still lying on the floor. I'm sure there a lot of other "dumb things I did" stories out there.

    Denver Co. Count the # of teeth on yours before you call.

    If they have one with more or less teeth then you can change the bendex gear to match.

    You can get new bendix for Hudson at 1-800 336 0769

    Oklahoma Starter Drive.

    Lexington Ok.

    I have used there bendix gears over the years.(give them the # of teeth on the New Ring Gear if Streamline Inc has a new ring gear.
