Garage Fire (almost)
I almost had a garage fire and lost my Hudson today.
I got the fuel line replaced this afternoon and opened the garage doors.
I sprayed a little ether in the carb and got behind the wheel. I then turned the key, pushed the button and she started to come to life. Sputtered a little and died (out of ether). I pushed the button again letting the fuel pump suck gas to fill the line.
Then that wonderful sound arose from the engine compartment.....She is alive! She is alive!
She was running a little rough at idle (I figured after sitting that long it would not be perfect). She responded to the press of the pedal and a smooth run up of RPMs ensued. A few more vroom vrooms and the garage was full fo exhaust fumes.
I turned of the car and got out to look under the hood. What a surprise I found.
Raw gas was dripping out of the carb and smoking on the now warm exhaust header. Quickly I got a fan to help evaporate the fuel and used all the available shop towels to get the little pools.
So, I have a really worn carb. I also found an exhaust leak under the passenger compartment.

Funny....The wife said the same thing. It will be mounted tomorrow afternoon.0 -
Probably you have a piece of dirt in the needle valve or a hole in the float. Just take the top of the carb off and clean up the float bowl, check the float and clean out the needle valve. Then try it again, but watch it closely. Maybe with an absorbent rag under the carb.
And, er..maybe back it out of the garage when you try it.0 -
I had a similiar problem with my Pacemaker. I started it after it was in storage for a few years. Gas poured out of the carb. A good disassembly and cleaning solved the problem.
I still need to mount a fire extinguisher... Maybe this weekend.
Glad everything worked out.

Perhaps adding a carbon monoxide detector and direct 911 link to your local emergency response team would be in order.0

Where do you live? I'll send my ex-wife over to help start the car... LOL.0
