Hi Guys,

I have anotehr question. Who's regular steel wheels will work on a Stepdown? I am looking to buy a set of GM, Ford or Chrysler rims to put some decent used tires on for moving the car around and a little light road running next spring. I am looking to find out who's 15" rims will fit.

Thanks,

Bob

  • CHRYSLER IS YOUR BEST BET. MOST OF THESE HAVE THE PIN HOLE FOR ALIGNMENT. FORD IS THE SAME BOLT PATTERN. BUT YOU NEED TO DRILL A HOLE FOR THE PIN, OR KNOCKOFF THE PIN, WHICH IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. STUDEBAKER, PLYMOUTH ALLSO NO gm cars will work, good luck BILL ALBRIGHT
  • Bill,

    Thanks for the info.

  • Mopar wheels will fit. Several people use the 15x7 cop wheels with the eight vent slots. Others use the 15x6 pickup or full-sized car wheels. Not all have the little locating hole as the stock Hudson wheels do, but that can be drilled, if necessary. Most of the older Mopar wheels (pre-'69 or so) have the locating hole, that was carried over from Mopar's use of lug bolts.

SOME Ford wheels may work, BUT...Ford has a smaller center hub hole diameter in the wheel center than Chrysler had. So, you can use a Mopar wheel on a Ford, but not the other way around. Mopars and Hudspns share the same hub center diameter.

Hope that helps. Others are bound to chime in, too.
  • Thanks Patrick.

  • Bob, for what it's worth, Motor Wheel produced the EXACT steel wheel for stepdowns that was used on Nashes and Kaisers. Other wheels like Mopar will work but generally the clips for hubcap retention are different Good luck
  • Hudzilla,

    Thanks for the info.

  • Is anyone on the forum using wire wheels? If so, what have your experiences been? Personally, I prefer my trim rings and Hudson hub caps.
  • Wires look good on hollywoods and convertibles... that's it...
  • Wires look good on all of the stepdowns - if you don't use the chintzy Wally-World covers! If you can't afford the Kelsey-Hayes wires (being repopped at about $1,300/set), you can go with the Chrysler 15" wire covers used from 1978-1988 on the full-sized rear-wheel-drive New Yorker, Newport, and Fifth Avenues. These are very robust and heavy covers with very good plating. They attach to the wheel by a hub that goes inside the wheel hub hole. The wheelcover itself is keyed and attaches with the keyed set screw. A chrome cap snaps over that. They look great on a stepdown. Three people in our chapter are currently running these on their stepdowns, all four-door cars.

You'll notice that these will accomodate the locating pin on your Hudson hubs with no problem. There are other places, too, that offer the K-H wires, but this is the best price I know of.

Do they have a place for the locating Pin ????
  • Look at the picture in their example, it is raised to accomodate the pin. There is no hole for it, but it is raised so it will fir your car. Call them and ask them more.
