Well I suppose this title could mean various things I guess, but I took the seats from my '50 to the local Chem-Dri Furniture Cleaning franchisee and they did a great job! They took the time to take them to an upholstery shop and get some of the bottons recovered. I would recommend this process to anyone with original upholstery and wants to keep it looking great. In addition the seats smell a lot better, especially after 40 years of being closed up in the car.

  • Is it still the original material?

if so, I was just curious as to whether they were able to do anything to restore the "flexibility" of the old fabric.

It is the original fabric and was in pretty good shape since it had seat covers from the dealer, however, it had various water spots and who knows what that had been spilled on the seats over the years, well as perspiration marks (which look to have come out pretty well also). The fabric is pretty flexible as is and seems to have held up well. Not have direct sun light on it all these years probably helped, it was in a garage almost all of its active and inactive life.
  • As far as I know, you can't restore flexibility to old fabric. However, an old timer told me that changing the underlying padding and/or foam will help to prevent original leathers and cloth from bagging and getting out of shape. It's sort of like wall to wall carpeting, if the pad stays firm, the carpet will not get stressed out and will remain smooth.
  • My 50 has he original fabric, and unfortunately, it lacks the flexibiltiy/supple nature that makes it viable to take the covers off, or trying to use it. I would love to have the original fabric on display, it looks like it's in great shape other than the driver;s seat, but unfortunately, might just get recovered.
  • Although it's probably a long shot, maybe you can find someone who has a car with good, matching rear seat upholstery that you can use on your front seat. The upholstery in my car was redone by the prior owner. Although it's not NOS, it's as close as one can get to original and sure beats the alternative.
