gosh... me and hudsondad cut cars apart that were better than that...
as far as the supermatic. I'm not sure that even having a complete set-up would make me want to bother with it. Actually I got a complete set-up, and opted for twin h over supermatic.0 -

Has anyone driven a Hudson with the Supermatic? Just wondering how well it works.0 -
uhh... yeah...
It probably didn't work that well when new. Seems every hudson I encountered with it, had the upper vacuum part removed and the larger vacuum line from the carb "crimped" (must have been the factory approved reapir)
I bought the missing vacuum parts off eBay one night, and honestly, have yet to open the box. It will NEVER go on my car, even though it was originally on it, but it is nice to hav the items to turn it back to a correct vehicle, proper numbers matching engine and accessories, you know the drill.0 -

So, what was the problem with the Supermatic? In theory, it sounds interesting. I was wondering how closely it approximated the function of an automatic trans.0

As I rember the supermatic alowed you to shift without using the clutch. You still had to move the shift lever through the gears. It has been just over 50 years sence i had that one and i never had anything to do wiyh one again. It was very hard to get it adjusted right so as not to grind the gears. Some one correct me if i am not rembering right

Supermatic was a 1950 only option that combined Drivemaster w/OD. This operated the clutch and shifted from 2nd to 3rd to OD by lifting your foot off of the accelerator pedal. You did not move the shift lever. Vacumatic was the vacuum operated clutch only option and there you did operate the shift lever but not the clutch pedal.
Talking to those that have used Drivemaster or Supermatic, if adjusted properly it worked well and did approximate a fluid drive automatic type transmission. However as with any mechanical type mechanism it needed to be properly adjusted and serviced. One of the key things is to make sure the two vacuum cylinders lubed, it not it will not work. I have discussed getting mine working again with George Schmidt and hope to get on it next summer now that everything else is working.0 -
When I last drove a Hudson with overdrive, I thought it was cool when you let off the accelerator and it shifted into OD. The Supermatic must have been a similar effect. Thanks to all for sharing info.0

I never drove a stick with overdrive, but I hear it's the cat's pajama's.... I'm sure the supermatic is the dog's pajama's.....0

If you read Langworth there is a section that quoted a road test of the 1950 Hudson w/ Supermatic and it showed that the car was faster using Supermatic than shifting manually. The review also liked the Supermatic setup. I will try to find the exact quote tonight.0

I think that the early attempts at automatic transmissions were fascinating. Stick with overdrive is a real hoot to drive. If I remember correctly, you can start out in 2nd and lift your foor off the accelerator to shift to 3rd. When coming to a stop, you simply put in the clutch, stop, leave it in second and left out the clutch. Again, you lift off the gas to shift from 2nd to 3rd. I think there is a more accurate description in the shop manual.0

les you probably had vacumatic which was just a vaccum clutch and was half of the drivemaster set-up. supermatic was drivemaster with overdrive (the supermatic name was added to the option in 50 drivemaster with overdrive was available in prior years)0
