History Books Needed
Since I can not heat my garage for the winter and do any priming and painting, I need something to do besides take parts off and wire brush them to death.
I am in need of reading material on the great history of Hudson automobiles. I would prefer a list that would compare to college-level, single-subject history program. This should be the top 40 list of books on Hudsons.
I am aware of the Butler book and the Lanworth book.
I like to read solid, detailed history to include engineering development theory....
So bring it on. I want to be ready for the spring thaw.

The Langworth is probably the best overall History of HUdson book. The Butler shows the models and sales info. You might also try the 2 books at the Ypsilanti Auto Museum website:
http://www.ypsiautoheritage.org/gifts.htm
The WTN back issues also would be of use to you. I will try to send you some of the info from Bernie Seigfried's years of Hudson Engineering when I get back home from my business trip.0 -

i don't think there are 40 books on hudsons. As far as a text that includes engineering development theory, I doubt you will find something that will suit your needs as such. Perhaps buying a collection of WTN's or something similar would suffice.0 -
Have you tried your local library, the library of Congress or Amazon?0

You done said the magic word talkin about some History. I spend most of my time in the History department at the Univ. of AL at Birmingham, and I've contemplated writing some sort of work for publication on Hudson. The Don Butler work goes without mention. There are actually two Richard Langworth books, one is Hudson: The Postwar Years and the other, Hudson: 1946-1957. A quick look in the Library of Congress' catalog also notes "The Hudson Motor Car", Edward V. Wood Jr., 1973, as well as The Hudson News, published by the corporation. There's also a book on founder Roy D. Chapin by J.C. Long. I'd start with these books and check their sources in the bibliography or acknowledgement sections. You'll find that this quickly branches out in all sorts of valuable directions. Looking at Butler for instance, under section "Many Thanks", he first mentions as of "paramount importance" the National Automotive History collection of the Detroit Public Library. This can be located online with ease. Secondly, Butler calls out the Motor Vehicle Manufacturer's Association of the United States. Third, the HET club and back issues of the WTN. Butler also mentions John A. Conde's "The Cars that Hudson Built", his "American Motors Family Album", and Langworth's Postwar Years as I've mentioned above.
This should give you some food for thought. If I were pursuing writing a publication right now I'd also contact D.J. Kava in the club and see what sort of sources he can suggest.0 -
"Roy D. Chapin", copyright 1945, I believe was a private printing, in very limited numbers (mine says "PRESENTATION COPY" in red letters) & no Library of Congress # ergo pretty rare & hard to come by.0

If you or someone you know belongs to the AACA, they have quite an extensive library for members use.0

I've long thought there is a need for a book or books of the quality of the Langworth book to cover Hudson up to WWII. Maybe a co-operative club effort?
Perhaps Mr Langworth himself or another prolific automotive author Karl Ludvigsen could be persuaded to take on the task.
I've copied the following list of Langworth's output from Wikipedia. All I can do is shake my head in awe..
The following titles are listed by the Gale Literary Database and represent a partial listing (not counting magazine and journal contributions) of Langworth's major works to date:

The Langworth book is a single book not two books. The first title is the original edition. The second title is for the second publication of the same text with revisions and additions. I have both editions. I suppose one could argue they are two books. But both editions are 99% the same book. The second addition has corrections and additions to the appendix.
Also speaking of Langworths output he also wrote a lot of articles for classic car magazines. I have lots of Collector issues and he writes an article in everyone.
The only book I have read that gives you any hint of what it was like in the Hudson design and engineering department is "Fun at work Hudson Style" written by former Hudson employee and long time HETer Harry Kraus this is one of my favorite books as it brings the living breathing Hudson company to life.0 -
All good suggestions. Thank you.
The local library and Division II college do not have any of those mentioned above.
I found the Butler and Langworth books by using the search function here.
I am surprised that there is not more information on Hudsons. It (the company) was a major player in the industty.0 -
Try the the World Catalog online. It turned up 123 hits under Hudson Motor Car Company. They won't all be on the motor car company, but a quick glance suggests most are and that it's worth using. The location of libraries hoiding listed volumes is also given.
Many publications by the company are listed, including technical manuals, sales literature, an oral history, annual reports, labor unions, Chapin's papers, service and owner manuals, etc. Walt-LA

For the prices some of these publications bring you probably could heat your garage!0 -
Articles from the magazine "Old Cars" by Arch Brown contains some good material on Hudson then as everyone else mentioned aside from Butler's book and Langworth's Book you Should try and locate Conde's book and get a copy of "Fun at Work, some back issues of the WTN. Chapin's book...I'd love to get a copy of that I have no idea where you'd find one. Finally, if there's a specific year you want to study you could contact John O' Halloran the HET club librarian and ask for a copy of whatever papers or photos he has on a specific year. When I was there in Dekalb he actually had some original engineering notebooks with calculations and such and copies of Chapin's book.
Supposedly from what I'm told, the Detroit Public library has boxes and boxes of stuff from the industry they haven't even sorted out yet. If you become a member or "Friends of the Detroit Public Library", supposedly you can actually browser through some of that material if you're so ambitious.
I've always wanted to find some material on Hudson's aircraft divison which was supposedly still around through the Korean War.0 -
Hudson, itself, published a brief history of the company in it's Service Merchandiser Magazines starting in the July 1953 issue and concluding in the Dec. 1953 issue.
There ran around a column in length in each issue, and while mostly general facts is interesting to read.

This book was reprinted recently. My wife bought me a fresh copy for Christmas last year. It is available, decent price too. My dad "borrowed" my copy after I was done.
Great book by the way, It is easy to see why Hudsons were superior for their time.
I'll ask where she bought it, probably Amazon.com,

If you want copies of what is available, used or new. try searching for Hudson (in title search) and automobile (keyword) at www.Alibris.com, www.bookfinder.com, www. bibliofind.com, and www.abebooks.com. All of these places represent thousands of independent used book sellers--some of whom want a fortune for their books and some who want a reasonable price,
Just recently I bought an original copy of the 1952 Hudson Mechanical Procedures Manual--bound with a hard cover because it had been a library reference book. The cost was $20.00. I was glad to get an original, and the price was right.
Good luck.

SORRY--Bibliofind.com has now merged with or been bought out by some other site--I'm not curious enough to find out. But that link is no longer valid.

Yeah, I know. But local regulations keep me from it. Now if it was separate from the house then I can do what I want. Some silly rule about gasoline from the cars and lawn mowers....
Oh, wait, and leaky carbs that needed to be rebuilt...he he he:D
Carb is on the way. I was told today in a phone call that a spring was broken inside.0 -

In addition to the great Butler, Conde and Langworth books, let me suggest three more to add to your list. The first would be Automobile Quarterly Volume 9, Number 4 from 1971; the Hudson issue. It includes a good history with some terrific color photos and some good b&w shots of Hudsons at the track. Plus it has two outstanding color photos of the X-161 and an Italia. I'd also suggest American Motors, The Last Independent by Patrick Foster. It's a good history of the Hudson/Nash merger and takes you through 1987's purchase of AMC by Chrysler. Finally to cover the AAA/NASCAR days, Forty Years of Stock Car Racing; The Beginning 1949-1958 by Greg Fielden. It's a terrific and comprehensive history with race-by-race results and photos. Enjoy!

Hell, you've got a rare bird there. It should be red leather bound, and it is one of only a few hundred copies printed. Long wrote the book and it was published by Ms. Chapin in 1945 in limited numbers for circulation to friends and family primarily. Thankfully it was picked up by Chapin's grandson and re-published. I did manage to find this book in the UAB library today and I read through it a little. It looks very interesting.0
