Alternative Drum Puller

[Deleted User]
edited November -1 in HUDSON
The only shop in town that rents parts does not have a drum puller (like that show in the other threads about pulling brake drums). They have not had one for 20 years.

AutoZone, who is nice to loan/rent tools, does not have one either.

I can not drive it to a brake shop due to plates/tags and no rubber yet.

Any suggestions for work-arounds in a limited (tools) garage?

These apparently aren't going cheaply...but that indicates that your purchase will be an investment, not money thrown down the toilet! Might even gain value, like bars of gold or real estate!

Next thought: someone in your local Hudson chapter must have one. You might try calling two or three people in the chapter (especially folks who are in a position to know a lot of members, like the President or newsletter editor) to ask if they know who has one, and if he would be willing to loan it out.
  • Thank you, Jon. I have not joined a "local" club yet as I am 3 hours one way from where the closest one meets.

I will make a phone call tomorrow afternoon and see if that can get me some where.

I am really disappointed in the local shops. They are not very helpful because they feel I am trying to keep money away from them. Little do they realize that if they help me now, when I really need some work done on my modern vehicles, I will be back.
  • Check with some old Chrysler products owners. Their cars needed the same puller.

Talk to the Pittsburgh guys, they're only one and a half hours from you.
  • FYI....The complete one went for $53.00. I bid $50.00 and was out gunned at the last second.

Well, lets see, you could make one out of an old rear brake drum. Drill the threads out of the lug bolt holes, and get some long 1/2 inch bolts that will screw into the hub you're trying to pull. 1/2-13 I believe.

Then get about a 3/4 inch grade 8 bolt and nut. Put a shallow point on the bolt with a grinder so it stays centered on the axle. Put the nut against the hub puller and hold it with a wrench while you turn the screw with a socket . Put axle grease or anti sieze on the threads, and DON"T whomp the end of it with a hammer. You'll break the spacer block inside the differential.

Sometimes you have to use some heat on the hub but don't heat to color change.

The key to getting these things off if the shoes are rusted to the drum, is to remove the large nut on the top rear of the backing plate so as to release the anchor pin, and thus the shoes. This will let the shoes come off with the hub, and you can then loosen the adjuster with a vise grip and pry the shoes out.

  • Also Pacemaker500, go to some local auctions, they seem to turn up once in a blue moon, often going for cheap.

Look for those auctions that have old tools, or even an auction a an old garage going out of business...

That is good to hear. I am still learning the geography of PA. We considered a house in Holsopple until our realtor told us it was 45 minute drive to work for my wife (the reason we moved - Army).

What side of Pittsburgh are you on? If we come to town, we either come in via 30 at Greensburg or 22 to go to the Regional Army HQ building out near the airport.

I'll call later this afternoon. I took your pictures to the tool rental when I was out searching.

Last time I checked (last summer) , NAPA still sold the pullers. They are still being made by K D Tools. Cost was about $80.00.

    I BOUGHT ONE!

  • Update............Per the recommendation of Paul, I called a local person listed in the Membership Rooster. I would have never called anyone unless I was on the road, had an emergency and the listing had the Assistance * by thier name. I did not feel calling someone just because I have the number was listed in the book.

I now have a puller to use, and have all the drums pulled. The fronts came off easy (no I did not use the puller on them). The rears took three taps each one the dog bone with the 3lb hammer.

I do want to thank that special annonymous person (The Tool Shop) who sent me a puller via FedEx this morning. It will be returned today. I am sending it back to the address that was on the box in California.

FYI...........NAPA On-line currently lists this tool at $178 and some change (plus shipping).

I am going to follow HudsonKid's advice and start sniffing around auctions and estate sales.
  • I did the same as EssexAdv and bought a new one. I got it at a local tool co., it was "Old Forge" brand, and also was about $80. It's already paid for itself; I've used the heck out of it! Also by buting new, you are assured of it being in good shape, etc.

What I would caution someone on is that buying new, unless you buy a quality brand, some of this stuff is made in China, etc.... you get what you pay for. Finding this stuff at an auction, you can very well end up with a snap on or other high quality brand for $10-$50. Of course with every purchase of a used tool, buyer beware, check it carefully.

As far as a wheel puller, I bet the limited use of these, they probably survive well, if they are not "abused"

Old Forge is the manufacturer for all the good names. they private label for OTC, Snap-ON , to name a few. and they all SHOULD BE around $80 new

I bought one at a vendor that sells new tools at large antique car and hot rod shows. It was $40.00, came in a nice plastic case, and works great. It looks like the one that went for $53.00 on the web, only brand new.

I have seen the same unit on the web (I think e-bay). Don't look under antique tools, as that omits the new ones.
  • I got a snap-off blue point for $35. It is very heavy duty. Keep your eyes open!

    Good Luck
