Spindle Nut

I am need of spindle nut (group 17.076, part no. 170061). It is the same for 48-54. The local stores do not have any.

When I took off the brake drums, the front right nut was cross threaded onto the spindle.

After speaking with Bill Albright this morning, I am going to attempt to locate a die and try to rework the threads. BTW, the thread are 11/16, fine.

11/16 fine, how many threads per inch ? that would also be relative. . .

You are correct, that would be a thing to know. When I asked about that at the parts store, all I was told was "fine." I figured that "fine" means something for the older cars. I have no way to measure accurately. I will see what I can figure out.
  • your nut size / description is : 11/16 - 18 threads per inch ( i took one off my car and measured the spindle) they are VERY un-standard in the auto and bolt industry however i am told that if you call your local Cummins Diesel Dealer and ask for their parts department they will have one for you. you amy have to ask for a parts guy thats been around Cummins for a while .

let us know for future reference. . . . .

A word of warning on this subject for anyone working with an unfamiliar '52-'54 Dana/Spicer rear end ... look carefully at the axle nuts when you remove them. The "severe duty" axles had a different thread count. If you don't notice, you can wipe out the threads by putting a standard fine-thread nut on it. Yeah ... don't ask how I know this! LOL.

Ayuh. The 11/16 -18 would be listed as a Fine thread, however, it's so rare even the New Departure handbook doesn't list it. The only one they list is a 24 thread Extra Fine which would normally be used for instrument and camera apps.

I suspect this size was dictated by the available standard bearing size. Who knows?
  • All I was able to find was 11/16 - 16 and 11/16 - 9. They were listed as Fine and Coarse, respectively. I can not find any refernce to the 11/16 - 18 TPI.

I have a thread file (did find an 18 tpi one) coming and a few "new" nuts on order. I will use one nut to try to open up the thread channel by putting it on castle end first.

Worst case is that I have to get a new spindle and learn how to install it. Best case is that I recover the threads and learn a new skill and learn how to install the new one.
