Hudson 8 Cylinder Timing Gears
Here in England I have a Brough Superior with a 1935 Hudson engine and I need some information about camshaft timing gears. I hope some reader has access to Hudson technical information and can help with answers to the following:
1. I have a 1 1/32" wide Westinghouse MICARTA gear #S - 1299179. I would like to know if this is a 14 degree (or should it be 17.5 degree?) pressure angle or a 20 degree pressure angle and what is the Hudson equivalent gear number?
2. What are the part numbers of the replacement kit (number 165907) of the 20 degree one inch wide aluminium gear and it's maching crankshaft gear?
3. Can anyone identify a crankshaft gear number 166310 and advise what engine and what years this gear was used and is it 20 degree?
Unfortunately, it seems that no-one in England can provide technical and part numbers and their equivalents so hopefully someone in Hudson land may be able to help.
Fred

Fred, Can't help on questions one and two but on three I can give you a partial answer. The part number 166310 was for the 46-7 Hudson-all and the 49-52 8cyl models. Good luck on your search.0

G'Day Fred.
Timing gears.!!
Hudson used two pressure angle timing gear sets, 14 1/2 degree then later changed to 20 degree.
Most fibre gears are 14 1/2 deg, BUT I have seen a few 20 degree.
I have a 1942 Hudson which had a 20 degree fibre timing gear when I purchased the car from the USA which I replaced with an Aluminium gear.It had 14,093 original miles on the vehicle, so I imagine they were the original gears.
Crank gear numbered 40147 which was 7/8" wide suited 1932 thru 1935.
Crank gear numbered 150566which was 1" wide suited 1936 thru 1940.
Crank gear numbered 166310 which was 1' wide suited 1946 /47 6 cyl
and 8 cyl 1948 thru 1950 8 cylinder.mated with 165958 timing gear.
Timing gears were made by several companies and are hard to identify, some by Westinghouse Micarta, others by Textolite . I have no manuals to tell me what numbers were used by these companies.
The Aluminium timing gears numbered 165958 suited all 1946 onward, these were 1"wide. both 6 cyl and 8 cyl.
The timing gear replacement kit by Hudson was numbered 165907 which suited 1936 thru to 1950 both 6 cyl and 8 cyl
I have one new old stock Aluminuim timing gear with a new old stock crank gear. I also have several second had sets.
In answer to your question re 166310 it is 20 Degree and suits 46 onward.
I would imagine that the replacement kit numbers were the same as the following
165958 and 166310
Modification is necessary to the front engine plate bolts when using the later gears in early engines. i.e 1932 onwards
I hope this helps and does not confuse you more.

Thanks for your prompt and helpful advice, as the crank gear is of such late manufacture it sure must be 20 degree.0

G'Day Les --- Thanks for your reply which helps me enormously, the only information that I now need is what is the Hudson part No for the 1 1/32" wide fibre gear, for 1935 on, 14 1/2 Degree pressure angle perhaps some other kind soul will come up with this ??
( Who has been giving you guys all the cricket instruction ???????? It sure seems to have been successful ! ).

Fred, was the "1935" in your last post a "typo"? As I recall, and as Geoff stated, the 1" wide gear began in '36. It's my understanding you can use the 1" gears in the '33T and '34-'35 H & T engines, but you have to use the "deeper" '36 or later timing gear cover (and maybe the later spacer and/or crank pulley ... I don't have my parts books unpacked yet!)0

Fred, according to my 1935 parts book the timing gear used in 1935 was 47062 and the crank gear 40147.
I did not want to mention the cricket, BUT, as you bought it up. Go Aussies.

Park ............ no typo, whilst the crank gear on my engine is # 40147, the camshaft gear fitted is fibre ( MICARTA ) and is 1 1/32" wide, westinghouse # S - 1299179. The cover is a wide one, about 1.2" (from front to rear face ) and short spacer, 0.665" long with 0.523" flat oilseal surface.
As the fibre gear is quite worn I would like to find and fit an equivalent fibre wide gear until I tackle the job of replacing both gears with a wide aluminium set later next year. Regards, Fred.0
