Essex clutch problem.

Can anyone help us with a clutch problem 1927 Essex with triple plates.

I personally have never had anything to do with the triple plate assembly.

Plates have just been recorked , they are to the correct thickness.

The problem is that when the clutch assembly is installed in the vehicle, the clutch pedal can only be depressed half way to the floor then becomes rock hard, thus no engagement of gears can be made.

All appears to be OK out of the vehicle.

    Two thoughts:

First, the fact that it works out of the car leads me to wonder if the clutch linkage itself is working correctly -- or if it's hung up on something. Have you tried having a second person depress the clutch pedal while you observe all portions of the linkage from beneath the car?

Second, have you tried e-mailing "Doctor" Doug Wildrick, our Hudson clutch specialist, on this question? You might try asking some of the other 'older Hudson' owners such as Dave Kostansek and Carl Weber.

    Thanks for your input Jon,

We have hooked all the clutch linkage up out of the vehicle, that does not appear to be the problem.

One major problem is once the unit is installed, you do not get much chance to look inside, unlike the later set up on Hudson & Terraplane. Give me the late set up any day.

Les, the cork clearance is 1/32" on the plates?

Yes Geoff, the corks are OK,

something real weird with this one.

This may not apply, because it has a single plate clutch, but I had the same problem with a 1940 Hudson. I had installed the throwout bearing upside down or backwards, I can't remember, it was a while ago, and the clutch linkage was hung up exactly like yours is.

Thanks JCF, have checked that type of thing, this thing is starting to drive us around the twist, everything looks like it should, BUT, it ain't.and we can not put our finger on what the trouble is.It has been in and out of the car so many times, we just say,"undo all the bolts yourself now" and they screw themselves out.LOL.
  • If all else fails, put in a single plate clutch, but, not sure if you can interchange the gearbox input sharft out of a 28 as they are different?

You can transplant the single plate clutch and flywheel. In fact if it is a '27, it should already have this, so it is either earlier than this, or has been got at! The transmission front shaft and bearing cap have to be transplanted as well, but they fit into the earlier box. As to why it is binding up, I have no idea really, but there must be a false limit somewhere in there. sometimes you just have to be Johnny-on-the-spot to actually solve a problem. Good luck Les. If you want I can supply a front cap and input shaft. Could even probably find a flywheel and plate assembly as well, but shipping would be considerable. Happy new Year.

    Geoff.
  • Thanks Geoff, I'll mention this to the owner of the car, I know the car was in very poor condition before it was restored hence the 1926 clutch. I do have the parts to convert if required.
