Dave ,If you are looking for Guide Day/Nite mirrors for stepdowns you might want to consider some of the Chevy repro parts dealers. Seems to me a few years ago I was at a show where a guy from Georgia was selling reproduced Day/Nite Guide mirrors for Chevy pickups for about $30. apiece. They were the exact one Hudson used in the stepdowns. Would probably work for older Hudsons as well. I think the outfit was Carter's Chevy pickups or some such as that. Anyway if one repo part is being sold by one Chevy dealer you know they all have them.0

Thanks Hudzilla,
I'm on that track right now. So far, what I've found are repros with a 5/16 smooth tread. That on the Hudson appears to be a course thread. I'll give the Chevy repro sites a peek.

And what better car to see in the mirror.0 -
Hi Guys..i have a new old stock glare proof rear view mirror...found it at a tractor show in the swap area...still in its old box. i paid 2 dollars for it. Quite a steal, but it is showing its age on the mirror..lots of squiggly lines. So it sits on the shelf with all my other Hudson things.

Can you tell us what the back looks like? Is it smooth or ribbed? What about the little handle? Does it look like a small half moon?0 -
Hudzilla wrote:You're right, but what I did was to canabalize the old rotton mirror I had from the Hudson for the ball socket screw.. I then took apart the new one ,removed the new ball socket screw, and put in the stepdown Hudson one. Worked fine.
Thanks, great idea! Since you've already done this, should the back of the mirror head be smooth or ribbed? What does the handle look like?0 -
The back of the mirror is ribbed. The interchange requires removing the front frame and mirror and then punching out the two rivets holding on the retaining plate that holds the ball socket screw. Use a small punch to punch out the rivets so you can reuse them. Take the old ball socket screw from the old Hudson mirror and place it where the Chevy ball socket screw was. Reverse the steps for assembly and Whamo! a Day/Nite mirror. The only indication of it being a guide part was the word"Guide" on the Day/Nite flip button on the bottom of the mirror. A lot cheaper than having an old one rechromed. As an aside all ball socket screws from 48-53 interchange. 1954 is a stand alone year but will interchange with the mirror. It's just a different style than previous years.0

Thanks Hudzilla! As usual, you're a wealth of good Hudson info.0

Good info. I took a different route and restored mine. Dont have a pic in front of me but trust me, it looks brand new. Had the bezel and tab replated, painted the base and bracket, and sent the mirror out to be resilvered. You can get resilvering done locally, but I found a guy in Hemmings. Mailed the mirror to him and had it back in the same week. Think he charged $15 or $20 bucks. In case anybody wants to do the same:
