Rambling thoughts from hudsonkid.... real long, pointless....
Well, I was thinking that my long quest for a coupe has not panned out, well, unless you count the Doc Hudson in the "fabulous hudson hornet" paint scheme, which I wanted one in the worst way, and now got three...
Seems there has been so many coupes out of the woodwork, just in the last couple of weeks. Weird how many of them seem to be 48-49's, and even a oddball 52 wasp coupe to boot. Maybe this will be my year, but financially, buying a coupe might not be in the cards this year.
The 54 that I looked at the other year, that ended up on eBay was kind of a heartbreaker. I figured that the car would be in Mastersonville, PA forever, until I was ready to go and buy it, well I guess we see how that worked out.
As far as the selling price, If I would have bought it for $7000, you better beleive I would have sold it for $13,500, took the money and ran. Probably would have bought a nicer coupe, and went from there. Perhaps a 48-49 is better for me anyhow. I like the idea of a later stepdown coupe, but the further away it seems to becoming a reality, I guess anything that is solid and reasonable in price will suit my need.
This spring and summer, I want to repaint my 50, and even think about putting on some of the chrome I accumulated for the last couple of years. The car used to look a lot better than it does now, just seems like you got to start over every decade or so. Hopefully, I learned a few things, and will be able to make it better the second time around.
I want to replace the weatherseal, front and back windshield gaskets, the vent wings, and the window channels. I haven't done any of this before, so it ought to be a learning experience. I got several glass issues to address, mainly two broken side windows, cloudy glass, and I would love to have some new glass cut for the vent wings, front and rear.
The interior of the car needs help. I know the original seats are in good shape, with exception to the front lower bench, which has tears on the driver's area. Really trying to figure out what would be the better alternative, to have them all recovered with something close, or try and maintain any of the original material. The door panels need work, the headliner needs replaced. could use a proper cut carpet, kick panels, and all of the filler vinyl from the sill plates to the floor.
Still need to find a few more parts, the ever elusive grille bar, which sitting here, now, I got to go look an figure out whether it's a left or right that I need. I got several NOS of the one side, but none that are ready to go of the other. I would like to find a nice set of taillight bezels, the front fender triangles, and geez, I need a commodore 6 side emblem, again, can't remember which one it is that I need.
The bumpers and guards all need done on the car. They are "old car chrome" condition, meaning they're not terrible, but they are definitely detracting from the car, if everything else is back to a presentable level.
I got two tires that continually go flat, I think it's a rim issue, I would like to get the rims powdercoated, but perhaps should try to find out where they are leaking as well.
I need to re-detail under the hood, repaint the engine, and finish the set of aircleaners I got, the paper element style twin h ones, the oilbath are nice looking, but it seems they restrict the car somewhat. I pulled them off one day, ran it with small chromies, and it ran so much better. I guess If I figure out what filter would fit into the oil bath ones, I would keep them on.
Sounds like a fun year ahead.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

At least yours runs! Since I know you like the stock look dude, I don't think you can go wrong with the '48-49 Coupes. I can't stand the '50 grilles! Looks like a darn attic vent! (Mine's getting the '55 Olds insert!)
No sweat dude, you'll have a coupe one day. You may have to do some traveling though. And you may have to settle with something that needs a bit of work. I don't think the prices are going to be going down anytime soon though. Or you can do like Chaz and make a 4 door into a 2, that's going to be a nice coupe!

Funny, I was even thinking of considering a 49-50 olds coupe. parts can be found easier.0

There's a nice Red '50 Olds Coupe around here, MII, V8, very clean little rod!
My son can't pronounce Oldsmobile well........he says something that sounds like "almostbile". What a hoot, huh?

Kid a solid '51 Pacemaker Coupe passed under the radar in WA. a few weeks back for only $1500 without it's engine. Guy was selling it with a Ford drivetrain obviously had intended to rod it. I know there's no love for the Pacemakers and Wasps and some guys say they look too proportionately stubby, but those aren't going to be rediculously priced the same as the Hornets. Maybe if people would STOP POSTING EVERY COUPE that came up for sale there'd be less competition when you wanted to go buy one. LOL0

yeah, a short wheelbase coupe would fit the build even better than a hornet. I would just put a 308 in it anyway....
As far as the olds, I would wanna keep it stock, or at least period correct, you know, red wheels, whitewalls, keep the rocket, add some old speed equipment, etc... maybe black primer...0 -
They are out there. Have you ever wondered how come there are so many stepdowns left and particuly coupes considering the low production numbers compared to GM and Ford? Over the years I have had a 50 Pacemaker coupe, 52 wasp hollywood and 54 super wasp hollywood and much perfered driving them over the longwheelbase cars I have had.Of course nothing beats my 33 T8 coupe. Except it is nose heavy due to the 8 cylinder engine.0

I've read test reports from 1950's car mags that state the short wheelbase models were "softly sprung and floaty." Assumingly, this was to make up for the choppy ride inherent to short wheelbase vehicles. As far as that goes, I feel no big difference in handling when driving my Hornet (which corners like its on rails) or a well put together short wheelbase model.0
-
Being the Hudson new-be I am , whats the difference in wheel base between the short and long wheel base on step down cars ??0
-
Basically, the difference is 124 inches for the Commodore/Hornet and 119 for the Pacemaker/Wasp.0
