Wanted: Sources for Hudson Hornet Racing Pics

I am trying to find some really great pics of Hudson Hornets racing, or locate some very good hi-res scans, for the purpose of building a rotating wallpaper (screensaver) on my iMac. I have found some pics here and there on the Web, but they are generally not real high resolution. The only "hard" source I've found so far is John Conde's book The Cars That Hudson Built, which our local library has. The pictures in the racing chapter scan OK, but since the pictures are enlarged considerably, it brings out the detail from the dot-matrix printing process, which is somewhat annoying. Are there any other Hudson books out there (or racing books) which may contain more or different photos, perhaps of better quality? Either color or good b/w will do; action shots, stills, whatever.

I remember some discussion on a thread about Hudson vs. Oldsmobile which someone brought up in response to a TV program which gave brief mention to the Hudson Hornet. I remember the threadwriter saying that he had a "photo which basically told the whole story--a Hudson crossing the finish line with the Oldsmobile behind it going over the wall." Sure would like to see that!

If any of you have any high-res scans, you may share them with me if you wish. My e-mail address is: KFHETrupprider73@yahoo.com (remove the KFHET). My screen resolution is 1440 x 900 (an iMac Intel Core Duo), so they'd have to be pretty high-res. I also promise not to sell them or redistribute them in any way; I intend these strictly for my own use on my iMac's desktop.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out.

Best wishes, Tom

  • Also; are there any other books/publications out there on Hudson cars? All I've seen so far is John Conde's book; I would think by now that there would be a few more.

Tried at the library last night to find Hudson racing pics in some of the books on racing. What a vacuum. Every book I could manage to find as far as stock cars were concerned only had NASCAR racing, and only the modern stuff (last 30 years) at that. No decent Hudson pics among 40+ books, and only brief mention of Hudson's career in NASCAR.

I know that Hudsons raced in AAA and, I believe, USAC; not that I could find anything on that. Are there any books out there on the other stock car racing circuits?

Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble haven't been much help, either.

I sure hope someone out there can help.

    Please and thank you,

  • Tom,

let me check my stuff. I have the Hudson sales films. They have a reel called Hudson at the Races and it has some great pics of Hudson stock car races I will see if I can have scans made as they are original source film I should be able to make nice scans. Was doing this but put it on the back burner as this crazy thing called working for a living got in the way.

    Tom:

Probably the best history of Hudson stock car racing would be "Forty Years of Stock Car Racing: The Beginning 1949-1958" by Greg Fielden. The book cover photo is a terrific color posed shot of Marshall Teague and Herb Thomas after finishing first & second at the 1952 Daytona Beach race. The photos in the book are technically not very good but there's a wealth of information about the races, drivers and cars of the early days of AAA & NASCAR racing. Highly recommended reading.

  • Thanks so much, guys. I just joined the HET Club; I'm currently waiting on receiving my membership info in the mail.

54Hollywood Tim, I'm up in Oakfield (Lamartine actually), just up 151 about 45 minutes from you. Do you go to any of the local shows (Jefferson, Elkhorn, etc.)? I've been going to some of the bigger shows again last year after about 5-6 years of being out of the car show picture--a new marriage and buying a house will do that to a person--and I was shocked by the absolute derth of Hudsons this year, even at Iola for Pete's sake!! There were more Kaiser-Frazer products at Iola '06, including our '54 Manhattan, than there were stepdown Hudsons! There was one black '54 Hornet four-door in #3 condition--that was it. I used to see all kinds of them all over the place; wonder what happened?

Hope to see you--and any other Hudsonista you can convince to come along--at the shows this year.

    Bets wishes and thanks,

    Tom
